Engine squeaks on cold start up

Hi guys,

Just come across a problem ( :( )with the XR6-T, done 16,000km with out any other problems.

Basically If any body can give me suggestions as to what the

problem could be:

On cold startup You can hear regular timed squeaks from the engine, hard to pinpoint where it is comming from. As you give it some gas and the revs go up the squeeks increase in repetition with the revs.

But as the engine progressively warms up the squeeks dissappear. If you give it some revs the squeeks come back. Say 1/2 temp, the squeeks come when you hit 2,500 revs.

As the engine is fully warmed up the squeeks disappear entirely.

I got the car booked in for service, the service guys say it could be the pulleys (do not know what he means). So if anybody has any suggestions as to what it could be that would be great - I am geussing something to do with the water pump.

Cheers

Joe

G'day Joe,

I had something similar recently and I think it was the idler pulley bearing??? Don't shoot me if this is not correct but I'm pretty sure that's what I was told anyway was fixed under warranty also replaced the belt.

More than likely the sepentine belt, as ducatijb has mentioned. I had a hell of a time with mine when the car was new. The will more than likely clean the belt, and file any burrs off the pulleys. If that gives you no joy (like me) then push for a new belt.

Funny this topic has come up, mine only started doing this last week. Can hear it alot when in the garage after just kicking her over. My guess was the sepentine belt aswell. My heat shield on the exhaust has just started to rattle aswell. Looks like it's back to the service dept and have them fixed.

That was exactly my experience.

Per my dealer invoice for my 30,000km service: "Checked and replaced the surpintine belt as worn due to idler pulley casing, cleaned casing and test".

Problem is now fixed.

XR - About every 20,000-30,000km, all 3 turbo cars (incl Nissan and Toyota) I have owned, have had loose bolts to the exhaust manifold/heatshield. The T has been no different.

My advice is that anytime you put the T in for a service/warranty work - ask them to inspect/tighten the bolts to the exhaust manifold.

My heat shields on the exhaust (just under driver's side door) were rattling like hell. Car is only 4500k old. Must be a common prob. Tightened myself and, so far so good.

Me thinks that your problem will be the top idler pully. Mine got a touch up by the dealer as it was squealing in full load 1st gear runs.
