That Pioneer site is a bit light on the specs! If I was spending $2500 on a single driver I would want alot more information than what they provide and I think it might be a bit dodgy too, the VAS (how much air it moves) is very low, I think they've misplaced a decimal point.

Very Nice install though, I assume your running an amp (brideged mono?) per channel?.

As a matter of interest was that SPL recorded at around 42-45 Hertz...feeding 2500WRMS into that box would give just on 130Db at 42Hz Free Air, so in a cabin which generally give 20DB boost

.In a box so small 150DB is a great effort :ta:

2 subs doesnt automatically make 2 times as much base. Sub selection gets very technical and many factors will influence the performance of the subs: are they free air, is the polarity of both subs the same, have they been sized to suit the enclosure/boot.???

Am I off training wheels yet???

The amps that are used are Kicker 1200.1s mono blocks running at 1ohm each , the sub has dual 4 ohm coils parallelled.

Peak is @ 65hz and I have no idea what it is tuned to yet , the port surface area is as big as possible then I just made the port as long as possible without hitting the end of the box. Had no time to test or tune so there may be more in it yet.

150Db in any car is hard but in a bloody ute that has no room , its a farkin miracle. Mate told me 'just want 150' so we now pretty much got that first comp and now he says 'can we get 155' ? what do you reckon I told him !!!

Two Subs will add 3Db to your overall SPL...the other way is to literally double your Wattage.

KAL, a 150Db install in something so compact is a bloody great effort indeed, does your mate actually listen at these volumes?I mean you could just tell, "yeah...it's 155" :)

Like I said, if you would like send me any specs that Pioneer Provided I can knock up a "Theoretical Box" for you, you should be able to screw a bit more out of it.

As a matter of interest, did you consider using a Passive Radiator instead of a Port?If you dont need the sub to be "fast" and I cant imagine with a cone that heavy it would be,, you can run a much small box or have better response.

I think you need to have a look at the rest of the cars I have built.

2 subs will not add another 3db , unless

A you have amps capable of making twice the power at the half the load they currently run.

B you have room , (which we dont) to have another box the same and setup so they dont cance each other.

This car competes regularly and you cant trick the meter by yelling 155Db at it. I will get more out of it , just need time to test. ie . . dont have.

Passive radiators are not used for SPL as they can not tune the box to match the cars resonant frequency , porting is the only way to get it loud.

Yes, that is an impressive car no doubt.I wasn't having a go, I was merely offering a comment, like you were asking for.

I do have a question though. How exactly do you measure the "Reasonant Frequency" of a Car? This has got me intrigued.

And from my understanding a PR is still used to tune a box in the same way as a Port, but with the PR box occuying far less room than box with a CORRECTLY tuned port can occupy, not a slap happy fat as, long as tube which is probably detrimental to your box as the Wider the port, the longer it needs to be, otherwise you get chuffing etc but Im sure you realise all that already.

Then again maybe these principles only apply to HiFi, where something other than DOOF DOOF DOOF is required, stuff like Clarity, Linearity and a range that extends above 80Hz.

KAL,

Thanks for linking oyur homepage to show us your projects. :smilielol: While I have no interest in creating more horsepower from my deck than my engine, I must ask one question.... Why do people spend $,000's on big amps, headunits, subs, etc ?

I am not mocking you or people who do this, but I have always wanted to know. Surely you cannot sit in a car putting out 156db, I thought anything over 150db would kill you, or at least cause pain.

Is there a noise limit that cannot be exceeded ?

How does your little 4 cyl support so much power output ?

does the loudest stereio win the competition or are there other factors ?

Sorry to hijack your thread, but, I have seen these cars with massive systems before, but never spoken or met anyone that did the work.

I hope you do not mind the little hijack, but I am sure there are others that are curious.

I think people do this for the same reason people climb everest...or for the same reason people Rice up their cars...COS THEY CAN.

Damn ... nice work :)

My little project a few years back was a '79 suzuki 4x4 - 15" JL-4 in a huge box ... never had it tested (maybe one day) but the problem was keeping the car from shaking. The box was tuff - Inch MDF with 1/2 inch glass in the top and 2 pak spider paint on the inside :)

Nice "blueprint" paint job - "metallic sky blue" I think it was and vinyl trim to the seats - came up nice.

And now it makes a good truck for towing the tinny :)

Good work KAL-SPL !

Cheers,

B.

ZapXR6T I am currently at work but when I get home I will give detailed answer to your questions , but basically its the same as why would you make your car do 240kmh over 1/4 mile when the speed limit is only 110kmh ?
