I think it would be worthwhile to know what % of diffs have this "period noise" ie whine at about 90 to 100kph.

My motive is to help me and others decide whether or not to push for a diff transplant (with all the potential consequences - eg vibration, getting another with the same problem, getting one with worse backlash etc).

Several people have commented that all the diffs whine. It would be nice to know how true (or otherwise) this is.

Bugger, we need to get the larger button in the poll to say Vote, not Null vote! Idiots like me hit the button to add my vote in the poll, but stupidly hit the larger button (Which is Null)... Or am I the only one ? :smilielol:

Put me down for a No vote though, I don't have any noticeable whine in the diff at this stage !

I have it between 80-100, and its gradually getting worse. Have finally decided to bite the bullet and get them to put a replacement one in, as I have 45000km now. Apparently after 50000 they dont replace anymore, they rebuild your existing diff. that's what they told me anyway.

Thanks to this place, I now know to make sure they have the tailshaft tool at the same time, and I wont get it replaced until it comes in.

My car has a noisy something, unsure if it's the Dunlops or the diff. :smilielol:

The easiest way to find out, is play with the throttle. On very light throttle it should whine at about 90kph, but when you back off it should go quiet. That was the symptoms for my whining diff anyway, and they replaced it, no questions asked.

Because youre so old, you may have trouble hearing it. If you do, let me know, and Ill take your car for a drive and find out.

I've said this somewhere else in the forums but I'll repeat it here because of the subject.

I bought my T second-hand with 15000ks on the clock. The previous owner told me he had the diff replaced because of a whine. When I bought the car it had a barely audible whine between 80 and 90 km/h. Now the car has 21000ks on the clock and it has a very loud whine between 80 and........just make that above 80. As someone else has said above, it is only there while actually applying throttle; take my foot off the gas and it disappears.

I'm going to get it fixed but I've read in another thread that the manufacturers of the diffs are about to come out with a proper fix. I might hold off for a while.

In the meantime it's an embarrassment and pi$$es me off!!!!

My suggestion from experience is do not change it unless you cannot bear it. Talk to your service manager for regular updates of when the supposed Diff Upgrade' is meant to eventuate.

Great idea with the poll, you could probably extend it to who has had more than 1 diff fitted, I think there may be a line :smilielol:
