Dealer asked me to provide a car that doesnt have the problem to prove to him its not normal.... also for the driveline shunt... luckily my brother bought one 2 months before I did and he doesnt suffer from either and said he is prepared to take it to the dealer to show that his car doesnt do it..

l have heard plenty of bad dealer stories, but that one is absolutley pathetic.

What a bunch of wankers.

yeah, 5th to 3rd is not as simple as it should be - but as ppl have said, live with it, I rarely go from 5th to 3rd anyway, 5th to 4th is awesome!

Chris

"As simple as it should be"????.... can take me up to 10 secs to get the thing in.. and just because I dont have bad brake shudder I would never say to some1 who has, quote "live with it"... they shouldnt have to... its attitudes like this that allow car manufacturers to get away with more then they should...

please dont think im having a go at you... cause im not.... just trying to point out that different people find different things more annoying then others. and that we shouldnt have to put up with any of it..

crisso did say that it's NOT as simple as it should be.

agreed..... he did say that... and am pointing out that in my case it is a lot harder then it should be... clearing that up just incase you misunderstood that part of the msg.... maybe just the way I express things... but that wasnt having ago... aggreeing more then anything else ;)

the only part I disagree with is the l"ive with it" attitude

jetute,

I was agreeing with you, but as many ppl on this site have pointed out to me, it is a series 1 car and will have issues.

I will be honest, I don't have any feelings toward this issue, prior to today (until reading your post) I had not once needed to flick from 5th to 3rd, hence, I said 'live with it', although I do agree that this is not right  there are ther bigger issues IMHO, brake shudder for instance, people are living with.

If you are that unhappy, go and have it replaced, just hope and pray you are not worse off as has been mentioned in this very thread previously.

How do you find all other gear changes, just curious...2nd to 3rd especially.

Mondie... to clarify this.. I actually said to the dealer I know a guy that has a car that doesnt suffer from either and therefore this is not normal.... he shrugged his shoulders and said well it is normal.. He then said he has a car out the back that does the same as mine and he can show it to me... I the replied that I can show you a car that doesnt... he then replied, quote "c'mon then"

This is why I said he asked me to provide a car that hasnt got the problems... that's the wa yI read it..... just wanted to clarify that he didnt say it the way I said in the previous post but his comment meant the same thing.

crisso.. I find second to third to have a slight crunch feel to it.. however my wife says she has major trouble from second to third....

4th to 5th is a dream as well as 3rd to 4th... no probs there

pretty much de-ja-vu for all who ticked the manual box I am guessing :)

I will say this - although this is not the best box on the market (no box jokes lads), in hind sight, I would still go for the manual, I love driving manuals and here's hoping sometime down the track we are presented with an option that could perhaps improve it...

From my initional problem of the downshift from 5th to 3rd to my now woes of loose selectors and crunching into 5th at anything over 80km's I have had the gearbox removed and repaired/replaced 3 times already and it's going back again. Believe me they will try to claim anything to get around the "short shift" problem as the manufacturer states they are not made for this end. When I spoke to the manufacturer I pointed out that his comment was unrealistic as many manual drivers incorrectlly don't downshift at all and just use their brakes to slow down. This being the unfortunate truth there would be times that the so called average joe would need to change from 5th to 3rd or even 2nd depending on the traffic conditions. I personally don't agree with this practice but for overtaking on the hwys I am all for it. I also pointed out that if this is supposed to be a drivers car then it should be dummie proof to that end and not a specilist art to drive. He couldn't argue that point.

Guys, thanks for this topic.

I read the XR6T review in MOTOR in late 2003. I remember the quote as "...5th to 3rd? forget it..."

I have this problem as well and avoid shifting from 5th to third as a result.

However, my box has just started to crunch on the 4th to 5th shift, always when over 100kph.

My 30,000 service is coming up. I will add this problem to my lengthening list.

With all these faults, I still love driving it and I'd have another one tomorrow.
