When down changing from 5th to 3rd my gearstick seems to stop in the middle of 5th and 3rd and does not line up with third... have to push sideways first and then up to get it in... In thraffic this is a pain in the a$$ and is not always easy to find.... It does the same even if the car is turned off and you play with the box.... The stick doesnt flick back far enough to line up  All my previous rides have lined up no problem

I was wondering if it was possible to ask the manual owners out there to run out and try this and let me know if their car does the same

I'll check it out tommorrow Jetute, Good question I have never notied it off the top of my head, and I have downchanged as such before.

Just a question, how many k's has you T done as I have noticed the more k's the more the box loosens up dramatically.

I am on 13k and when I first got it it struggled just to find gears as it was so tight!

Thanks JB... I have 5900 km right now.... The only problems with the box are the down change and that I get major gear stick rattle in third...

I had this downchange problem from 5th to 3rd and was told that gearboxes are not made to short shift live with it. I was actually being locked out of 3rd altogether on a downchange from 5th. After much pressure they sent out a rep from the gearbox makers and he said the same but eventually they replaced the box with the provision that if the new box had the same issue I would have to live with it. The new box worked fine but after 2,000km I started to get the dreaded cruch into 5th and every gear was loose and had freeplay of 15-20mm. I have had the syncro replaced and sent it back twice to get tightened up. I have to get it tightened again. Maybe I was better off being locked out of third???

This is very common in the XR6T. What you describe is pretty much exactly the same in my car (over 30,000km now). There has been quite a lot of discussion on this site about the gear change from 5th to 3rd, but not for a pretty long time.

I find that sometimes it is nearly impossible to change straight from 5th to 3rd, other times it will do it but you really have to push hard on the stick or really take your time doing it. It does get better with more km on the clock, but it doesn't go away. It hasn't bothered me that much because I don't often use 5th gear.

I must say I really don't understand this need to skip downshift. T will go second to fourth, but that is about the only skip shift it will not baulk at. Coming back from fifth, what speed are you downshifting at? The gate interlock plate in a T5 is angle cut to allow smoothness from fourth to fifth. If you go from fifth to third you are going around the sharp edge of this cut and the stick will tend to catch on the lip. You should find that if you depress the clutch and go from fifth to fourth to third and then let the clutch out, this will still be a quicker shift than fifth to third. Ben.

I have owned many car and the 5th to 3rd change is an integral part of overtaking on the highways that do not have duel lanes. It is also much quicker than your suggestion if you gearbox is operating correctly. I hear what you are saying about the sharp edge but then why when my gearbox was replaced this issue disappeared even if I got new ones to deal with.

Live with it.

Sometimes I have trouble going from 4th to 3rd as the thing doesnt line up precisely. Hell I'm not in a race so if I miss it every now and then, who cares!! Get the crunching on a fast change from 4th to 5th evey once in a while.

Overall for $45K I reckon we have done pretty well !!
