We have tuned a number of different high performance cars on different brands of premium unleaded fuels and there is no doubt in my mind that the shell and mobil 98 ron fuel is superior to any other premium unleaded fuel sold in Melbourne.

The mobil and shell 98 ron fuel is not sold or distributed in the NT and this is what I based my comments on. Fact is you guys in the NT dont unfortunatly have the best premium unleaded fuel available as of now.

I have not tested the B* fuel which is sold in west Australia so I cant comment as to how good or bad that fuel is, I can say for sure that we have tested the B* premium fuel sold in Melbourne and the difference between the shell and B* premium unleaded fuel in the same T was 12kW. :o

Hope this clarifies the issue and helps other forum members who are based in Melbourne choose the best premium unleaded for their T.

As you said best avalible in Melbourne. How can you comment about NT Fuels? I have tested bp ultimate and so has my friend in His XR8 in Brisbane the throttle response was better than optimax tested in Brisbane as well. May have to talk to a friend in touring cars to get the alusive optimax power gain and throttle response I didn't get from servo's in Brisbane. Do you make the same claim on Brisbane fuels as in Melbourne. As also stated Placer Domer have done extensive testing and found BP to be puriest, maybe purity has nothing to do with power but I would like to know what was in my tank. Cleanliness is the essensce of engineering. Don't you agree. I doubt that your workshop floors are covered in grease, dirt and rubbish? But as we all have no dyno sheets there is no right or wrong it is an individual experience.

Mate fair enough I have not tested the B* fuel in QLD though I have tested the B* 98 ron premium fuel many times which is sold in melbourne.

I can confidentally say beyond doubt (the dyno does not tell lies only measures the power) that the Mobil synergy and Shell optimax 98 ron unleaded fuel is far superior to the B* ultimate sold in Melbourne in terms of both power and engine response in the xr6t.

This could be why the BP is not as good in certain states

"A particular feature of the Australian oil industry is the practice of refinery exchange, in which refining companies exchange products in various locations to minimise distribution costs. For example, BP supplies other companies in Perth and Brisbane and in return is supplied with product in Melbourne, Sydney and Tasmania".

I wonder what fuel they are using theres only optimax and Synergy ?

Tony, From what APS was told by the head offices of both Shell and Mobil there is no sharing of premium 98 ron fuel between the oil companies.

Yep - refineries don't make each others fuels specifically. Having said that, individual sales are made of high (98) ron fuels from refineries to marketing departments. How Marketing distributes the fuel from that point is all done with smoke & mirrors.

The fuel exchange system has altered in the last 18 months or so and now some refineries are strictly selling the fuel rather that swapping it.

What ever fuel you buy it will (should) still meet the company's spec's that is marketing it. Be aware that fuel is blended differently for winter and summer, as it is if it's being sent to Antartica or PNG, so it may have a small effect on tune

Two points of advice:

1- Buy high octane fuel from brands which have their refineries located in the state

Vic - Mobil, Shell

WA - BP

NSW - Caltex, Shell

QLD - Caltex, BP

Adelaide - was Mobile but now moth-balled

NT/Tas - sorry-nothing

2- Never EVER buy fuel from a Station that has a tanker onsite refilling the Station's tanks. The tanks should be isolated and allowed to settle, but often not. If there is any water in the bottom of the tank you'll get a gut full. Half a dozen fuel filters later you'll realise that paper cartridge fuel filters don't like moisture.

New info guys spoke to a reputable oil supplier in regard to fuel found out some interesting facts. Optimax has a shelf life 28 days so if not close to fremantle you will need to check the fuel is not an old batch. He also agrees that the BP ultimate is the best fuel avalible. He was present at the CNJ T day and found him to be very knowlegeable.
