Guys, Optimax *IS* BP Ultimate or vice versa, depends on whether your state has a BP refinery, or a Shell one.

So for VIC, NSW, ACT they are both from Shell, in QLD/WA it's BP.

I don't know if each adds anything beyond the refinery but the fuel is generaly the same - any difference you feel could be purely mental, or your particular servo is dodgy or something.

You can prove that then?

As far as I was aware Optimax has a unique chemical composition.

It is my understaning also that BP and Shell use each others PULP fuels in different states.

Just think of the costs saving to the companies of not having to operate their own refinery in each location - rather they just have an arrangement to share the output from the refineries that are in place.

I find you also get more milage out of Optimax, so it seems that extra 10cents a litre will almost work out the same as using regular PULP etc. Plus it is a hell of a lot better for you car! Doesn't bother me at all spending a few extra cents a litre for piece of mind that my car ain't going to sh!t itself with bad fuel.

Just my 2c worth :smilielol:

I cant tell you how bad the B* premium fuel is in Victoria, Its amazing nearly every time we are struggling with a lower than expected power from an engine

Funny you should say that.

In the 3 months I've had my T, I've put two tanks of Mobil 8000 and one of the BP. The rest has been Optimax. And the only reason for not using Optimax the whole time was availability.

The Mobil performed fine. I can't say I noticed any difference between it and the Optimax.

The BP? I gotta tell you the car performed like a dog. No guts at take off, poor city performance. I may as well have been using BP Zoom mower fuel. Never again.

Yes they are made by the same refinery... BUT the additive packages are the sectret.. They may brew BP and Shell in the same place but they don't brew it in the same drum.

Essentially the agreement is that the companies have a single refinery, but the fuel is made to the individuals reciepe...

Think of it like making beer, a brewery may produce light and full strength lager, and yes they're similar - but they're nto the same are they?

*grins* I learnt a lot on Cascade Brewery tour ;)

Great thread!

I have been using BP Ultimate and Optimax for the last 20,000k's

Both give me a mid range flat spot - sort of. It's hard to describe.

The weather makes a difference as well. Bring on the cold.

I will try the Mobil Synergy and see how it goes. Now where is the Mobil aroung Hurstville?

Well that is simply amazing. I guess each company must blend their own additives to the base fuel as the performance difference that we have seen and measured between the 2 brands of fuel is significant. I would walk before I put B* ultimate in my GT3 or twin turbo Porsche. :banghead:

APS

It's funny you should say this as one of my friends has just had a survey completed for placer domer and found by independent laboratory testing that BP fuels and oils where the purest cleanest of all the samples taken and supplied to the company by the respective companies.

Also I have problems with my T stalling, hunting, rough idle all disappeared when I started using BP fuel exclusively (Not BP Ultimate). My friends XR8 was a totally different car to drive and got better fuel economy on the highway an extra 100 clicks I was amazed the difference BP Ultimate made.

Also my boss has just taken ownership of his highly modified R33 GTR and made a friendly call to the shell rep for a couple of drums of optimax as it is not available here. The response from the shell rep was that he could organise it and upon querying him on the difference between Optimax and BP Ultimate the rep explained that Optimax is actually a by product of the fuel making process and that the BP Ultimate was a better fuel go figure.

Many scenarios could happen, my experience testing of both fuels I prefer the BP although harder to get than optimax. Stating all the above I do have to concede that all the touring car use optimax, although comparing the optimax they receive and we receive is most likely chalk and cheese.

The other thing to be wary of is the servo's you are getting the fuel from. You hardly ever see the fuel going into your tank and don't have any idea if it is indeed tainted or watered down or even the premium product unfortunately all fuel is relatively the same colour. Tanks can be damaged waterlogged some people even add acetone and water to make it go further as the acetone allow the water to mix with the fuel. Water run off, seepage and vegitation the list goes on.

As I cannot get optimax or Bp ultimate I usually add Nulon pro strength octane booster to my T it provides a better throttle response and reduces pinging in the hot harsh area I live in.

Any how I think the APS kits are awesome and are glad to see that you have taken your rightful place as the fastest XR6Turbo in Australia not as zoom misrepresented the Nispro kit. Unfortunately my beloved zoom mags are now not as unbias as it used to be as they don't represent and inform buyer of what is really available these days. Nispro kit is so ugly too. What are your thoughts on the Nulon Pro strength octane booster.
