My motorbike runs a high compression as standard and the only fuel that would stop the bike pinging was Mobil 8000. This was also the fuel the bikeshop told me to use.

Just have to be carefull not to put in Mobil premium which is only 95RON.

I know there's a write up on fuels in a magazine recently, just can;t remember which one.

Yeh, my NA Fairlane runs a high comp. 4.0 litre, - BP Ultimate, & Caltex Vortex are the only fuels that it doesn't get pre-ignition (pinging).

So I try to run those two fuels in the "T" where ever possible.

I used to run 'any old' PULP in my car but used to find erratic performance ie. would be a jet one day and a slug the next, so I changed to filling with Optimax wherever possible (only 98 RON avail in Canberra). I have used only one tank of 'ordinary' PULP and that was on the recent Snowy Cruise where I filled up at Jindabyne and to be honest could pick no difference in performance. My car is stock.

I have read on other forums that some motorcyclists aren't fans of Optimax, not sure if it's just a perfomance thing or something more sinister.

I use optimax. Have done since it became available. My previous Pulsar SSS loved it , and so does the T.

I generally notice a 7-10c difference with the Optimax compared with the normal unleaded. It's been like that always, even before the "discount" crap.

Don't know why people complain about paying an extra 7 or 8 cents a litre a 98RON fuel, its better for your car and if you do the math it's only an extra $5 a per 65litre tank. Big woop!!

G'day,

In my Fuel Injected VFR 800, the first and only batch of Optimax went into my bike, It soon developed a bad misfire jsut before the Vtec Point, and was returned to the service shop, and they fixed the bike by

quote "Cleaning your injectors and fuel system out, you used optimax didn't you, Don't do it again, optimax has detergents in it that are unique to Shell. THank you please come again!"

I.e. No charge, done under warranty, so I'm not sure why id be spun that if at least part of it wasn't true! (well knowing my luck with motorised vehicles and servicing, I spose I shouldn't ask)

1st service on my ZX9 they told me a similar thing, when I compplained about pinging. Might be something to do with the high revs or alloy block. :bringiton:

I also am a motorcyclist and ave been told that the shell optimax detergents will clog up injectors and foul up the spark plugs on a bike. There are modifications available for the high performance bikes like the R1 that will allow you to run the optimax fuel. The first of wich are increased fuel delivery jets.

I have tried using optimax in my T and found that after about 4 tanks the car starts to run sluggish. I admit it runs smoother but the power loss is noticable. I much prefer the Mobil Synergy 8000 also a 98 ron fuel and the same price difference. Second to that the Caltex Vortex then BP Premium not the ultimate again I find the ultimate to have similar effects to the optimax.

I generally fill my T twice per week and the bike 3 times a week. I think changing fuels regularly keeps the car running at better performance. It's like different fuels have slightly different properties and different places that get clogged up. Changing regularly doesent allow the system to clog as easily and will assist in removing some of the previous fuels negative properties. Maybe I am wrong but doing in excess of 60,000kms a year for the last 12 years this is what has been my experience.

I find that BP Ultimate and Mobil Synergy 8000 are usually about 9 - 10 c/L dearer than regular ULP. Caltex Vortex is about 6 c/L dearer than regular ULP. I use all 3 of these petrols and have never noticed any difference in performance.

We don't have Shell Optimax here in Adelaide, so I can't comment on any price variations since the Coles price discounts started.

On a side note - I see that Caltex and Woolworths are joining forces similar to Shell and Coles. This will be good, because since I got my XR6T, I've never been game enough to trust Woolworths petrol. So I've missed out on a lot of potential discounts.

Caltex - Woolworths

I use woolies all the time,no probs, tried all the other stuff as well and found it makes your wallet lighter therfore an increace in performance

Ive never been able to feel the diff in change of fuel and find it hard to belive anyone can without some sort measuring tool.

In Brisbane, fuel tests have shown Ultimate @ 98 to be the best fuel.
