Backlash clunk

My car has now 3500km. With all my probs, now I think the diff is getting noisy, woo hoo!!

If it gets worse I will be ringing ford, again. If they tell me it is normal and it wont be replaced I will take it to a diff specialist and get them to pull the diff out and check the back lash. Then we will know if it is normal. I have been told by an insider, the backlash is due to inferior bearings in the diff.

Oh well I will keep my fingers crossed,

My diff has a slight whine at exactly 95ks and the occasional shunt in stop start traffic. Dealer has ordered a new diff, but I am in 2 minds as to whether to get the thing changed as the repacement are often more problematic than the originals :pics:

Both the XR6T and now our GT have suffered this badly.

Never got anywhere with getting the T fixed, and so far l have tried New Oak (where l bought both cars) with the GT and was brushed off.

Car is booked in at Strapp Ford (Melbourne) shortly and l am hoping to get somewhere this time, they come highly recommended. If l get the usual bullsh*t line, it will be time to start harrassing FPV. l am really indignant at the way Ford treat problems like this. :angry:

2nd one sounds like it's going to explode, hmm just had a thought, as they order the diff's directly from the supplier, I wonder if they are just reconditioning other ones and sending them out again.

Apparently a fix is on the way, however I don't know if I can wait that long as it is driving me nuts. :pics:

I want to get this fixed before I go stage 1 or 2. :angry:

The problem with changing a diff that clunks is that you could end up with a noisy one instead, l have never had a noise problem with either car. that's assuming the clunking is the diff and not something else.

Wow ... what a situation to be in.. if I get it repaired I could be worse off !!If I wait for a proper fix I could wait forever AAAAGGGHHHH. :pics:

bcr01.. I can understand you wanting to take it to a diff specialist..but then you bear the cost, dont you think you have paid enough !!

Sorry loss of concentration, I think I am loosing it. :nod:

Anyway Mondie, first Diff same problem as YCL, noise at 95km/h, gradually getting louder. Small amount of cluncking.

12,000klms on clock.

Replace diff after much battling (had to end up sending thier test guy out with me, 1 minute in the car, he says I need a new diff) Why did it take 2 times into the dealer before they acknowledge the problem!

Second diff in, service manager admits to me when I pick up the car that the new diff is worse :pics:

Guess what he's right!

It wines at about 40km/h then comes in at 80km/h through to 100km/h, and they even threw in the complimentary clucking just in case! :k24t:

Rest of the deatils are on the link I posted, but I will keep you in the loop, as it goes in for 15k soon. Hopefully a resolution to this will be ready in the next couple of months? I know this problem is widespread, as the dealer has alos admitted it and the supllier.

So your first diff didnt clunk, but your second did? l guess that confirms that poor toerances in the diff are to blame.

What a bloody joke Ford :angry:

The company that supplies the diffs to Ford is currently moving house, so my dealer told me that my new diff to replace the whining one I currently have will be at least another 2 weeks on top of the 5 I've already waited. :pics:

First diff was not as bad as the second with cluncking however, I suppose I am more aware of it when I change gear, so I change with more care to limit the cluncking.

Have a look through the other post, might get a moderator to merge the two.

Interesting.................I waiting 6 weeks for mine that was at least 2months ago apprently for the same reason, as the supllier was moving premises :angry:

How long does it take to move premises? They would want to be a profitable business to be unable to suplly for that long.

Oh wait a minute, page 53 of the Ford Dealer Service manual stipulates.

1a) When diff problems arise, inform customer of lengthy wait (approx 6 weeks) to try to push the problem aside, this will buy you time and hopefully make the customer reside to keeping their existing Diff.

Hmm thought so, that would explain it :pics:
