I spoke to peter warren, and they tell me they use Shell Helix Plus (15W/50) - semi syntheticthat's what ive used in my carPS - Changing the viscosity of the oil at higher temps (ie, in my case the 50 from 40) isnt bad because it just means that the oil will flow better at high temps. What I have found out (through reseach and speaking to various people) is that you should leave the viscosity at low temps as is recommended by the manufacturer (is the 15). It seems that anything under that is a bit too thin for cold starts and is meant to be bad for the engine (ie, not enough lub)I dont know how correct that statement is, please correct me if I am wrong. From what I have researched when changing the oil in my NA xr6 using a lower start up viscosity oil helps on start up as the oil circulates more freely and hence faster when the oil pump pushes eveything up top? I talked to castrol tech department not a rep.. from experience the reps know s%$#.... my turbo rebuilder recommend synthetic not mineral..The only thing castrol suggest is change oil to synthetic between 5000km and 10000km... Turbo rebuilder say change to synthetic before 15000km. Everyone has there own opinion and choices it all depend on who you trust the most... Well I trust Ford and they recommend 15W-40, and I wouldn't use anything else. Even APS said at the Melb. day that use whatever brand you like but stick to the 15W-40 grades. Your right everyone has there own opinions.
Guest Big Mick Guests Posted 31/03/04 03:09 AM Share Posted 31/03/04 03:09 AM It's interesting to note that in the manual Ford says for best fuel economy use 15W-40. It doesn't say that this is the best grade for maximum engine protection.

XR6_ED Member 1,517 Member For: 21y 10m 4d Posted 01/04/04 01:31 PM Share Posted 01/04/04 01:31 PM OK adding more oil to the fire.......... ... Done some phoning ,emailing ,etc... this quote from CASTROL.....The viscosity specifications on the BA XR6 Turbo are for a API SJ SAE 15W/40.Hence a 0W/40, 5W/40 & 10W/40 oil would be acceptable. As retail packs (oils available in 5L containers from regular retail outlets), GTX 3 (mineral API SL SAE 15W/40), Magnatec (which is a semi-synthetic API SL SAE 10W/40)and Formula R Synthetic 0W/40 (API SL full synthetic) would meet those requirements. On overall performance, would probably overlook GTX 3 in favour of Formula R or Magnatec.Magnatec 5W/40 SP is a trade oil (not available through regular retail outlets, available only in larger container sizes like 20L & 205L, available to dealerships & workshops). It is a synthetic SAE 5W/40, based on similar chemistry to the retail Magnatec and is also suitable for the XR6 Turbo.
rakrzy Member 32 Member For: 21y 3m 12d Location: Melbourne Posted 01/04/04 01:38 PM Share Posted 01/04/04 01:38 PM Huh 15W40 is not the same as 0W40,Other threads covered this, DavoWA has written this up from an insiders point of veiw,I was hoping to get confirmation that the 15W50 Motul I used would be ok, suspect it is as it meets all the ford requirements in terms of standards, and being a W50 should be a little better at high temps.
