The five young men were from suburbs in Brisbane's south. Two 18-year-old men, one from Rochedale and the other from Sunnybank, who were back-seat passengers in a sedan, were killed when the car smashed through a guardrail and landed in a garden embankment of the Sunnybank Hills shopping complex. One passenger died instantly and the second died as he was being taken to hospital. A third back-seat passenger, also 18, from Norman Park, escaped with severe bruising and a front-seat passenger, 19, of Gumdale, was treated for a suspected broken jaw. Both were taken to QEII hospital. The now-19-year-old driver, from Carina, suffered only minor injuries and was not taken to hospital. Resident Carmel Combridge yesterday said she was woken by the sounds of speeding cars, heavy braking and the impact, and was the first person on the scene. Ms Combridge said smoke was pouring from the car as she ran across the road, calling triple 0 on her cordless phone. Three young men were walking around when she arrived. "They were all in shock. The boy I assumed to be the driver . . . he was just saying to me as I was trying to find a pulse, 'Please tell me he's (one of the rear passengers) all right'," she said. "I just said the ambulance was on its way. I didn't have the heart to tell him I couldn't find a pulse." Neighbour David Brownlee said he held the hand of a trapped passenger, who was semi-conscious, speaking quietly to him until emergency services arrived. Police are appealing for witnesses who saw a small maroon sedan or hatch in the area, or who know the occupants, to come forward. Now that's stupidity. You learn by your mistakes and this your guy will have to live with this one in the back of his mind forever.
