FG MK1 - XR6 Turbo Automatic Transmission removal (ZFHP26)

Hi Guys

 

I know a few of you would have removed the Auto Trans from your XR6 Turbos. I'm currently in this process to renew my Rear Main Seal. Found a few other parts need replacing also.

 

 

1)I can't get a spanner to the nut at the back to remove the tailshaft 3 bolts from the coupling. There is no room there. How did you guys do it? Did you lower it first and then undo those 3 bolts

2) WHERE ARE THE TORQUE CONVERTER BOLTS UNDONE FROM? I can't see a viewing window or space anywhere on my ZF. Workshop manuals including the Ford manual have not been of great help?

3) DO I NEED A SPECIAL TRANSMISSION LINE DISCONNECT TOOL FOR THE TRANSMISSION LINE FITTINGS AT THE HEAT EXCHANGER?

Answers are: 

 

1. Don't undo those ones, undo the other ones. Leave the rubber donut attached to the tailshaft.

 

2. Through the starter motor hole. 

 

3. Undo that bolt for the black bracket on the trans. From there you can lever the lines out from the trans. Move them to the side, no need to undo the heat exchanger side to remove the trans. Those quick connects are easy to undo though, spray them with WD-40 and move them back and forth a few times, then you can undo them by hand. There's probably a tool for it, I know you can get quick connect tools for fuel lines etc. Google is your friend :declare:

1. Use a socket and extension?

2. There should be a plate you can remove from the bellhousing (connection between gearbox and engine) and you can remove that to do the converter bolts... or you take out the starter motor and use that hole to do the bolts.

3. They're probably the same as fuel line hose connections, but I don't know the answer to this one... looks like a connector that you have to push "inwards" from the sides and then pull/jiggle.

Thanks Puff for the answers for 1,2 and 3 (helps me out so much). Can you remember how many torque converter bolts exist?

Thanks K3ith as well for the info about the connectors. I'll try to pry out the lines at the transmission first, leave the others connected and then put them back in later.


Will try to remove the trans tomorrow. Starter motor and inlet manifold already removed. I just jacked the car up though quite high so hope the bonnet doesn't hit the roof when I open it up to start removing the torque converter bolts.

4 tc bolts. Mark it. Have a weak memory of the way they're orientated the tc can only ever go back to the same spot. 

When you have the tc bolts out use a pry bar to gently push the converter towards the transmission. It should move back about 5-10mm. That'll get the tc spigot out of the crankshaft bore.

Push the connector tab upwards. Give it a tap with something if you need to get it moving, but usually you can just thumb it up there. It gets tight at the top too, so do it in one hit.
