Shame about the leaking half moon seals. I re-sealed one a couple of years ago, and it was fine for about 3 months before the half moons both started leaking worse than the original factory ones were. I'm due to do this now on my territory turbo, but nervous that the aftermarket seals won't last as long as the original ones.

Had the same issue. Mechanic had sump off so new half moons and resealed the sump. Front half moon failed within 12m and I replaced myself.

There are a few recent stories like this and I noticed that the new Permaseal replacement I installed was slightly taller than the seal that was in there. (Inside limit is extended a little.) I wonder if there was a slight redesign at some stage and sometimes the wrong seals are going in, or if it is just a common issue and there was a redesign to resolve.

how are you guys going about installing them,workshop manual shows that one dob of silicone is to be used in the centre of the seal.

 

I wonder if it would be better to smear silicone all over the seal.

Silicone the fark out of it inside and out. Ain't nobody got time for sump leaks.

I've done a few Mazda B6/BP engines without issue. They have the same setup as the barra - front and rear half moons, with silicone every where else - and the factory manual specifies silicone both under and over the half moon. Is this what you do for barras @Puffwagon?

 

Not sure if there are any brands other than permaseal worth looking at, in general I've found their stuff to be better than others.

I'm not sure that's right based on the factory manual - says a dob at each end and the middle arrow is just showing the direction the parts fit together.

But if I was doing one again I'd be inclined to add silicone along the whole length of the half moon seal.

I run a bead in the sump where the seal goes and I run a bead on top of the seal. There is basically an unbroken bead around the whole sump. I also put a smear under the rear main cap and around the rear main seal. When I do the sump I let it dry for a couple of days before adding oil and running it. They will leak if you let them so I make sure I cover all bases.

I will be siliconing the bejesus out of it....the workshop that built the engine 18months ago did it as per workshop manual and it leaked from both front and rear half moon seals.

Make sure you run a fat bead along the recessed part of the sump. If you only put it on the flat part it will leak.
