They indicated that to measure the backlash they had to drain the oil from the diff and remove the centre cover to check it :spoton: hang on has'nt the car just had the diff put in why would it have not been checked prior to being installed? Surely the supplier does not deliever the diff with oil in it. The only thing I can asertain is it is delivered as a sealed unit?

The Ford IRS design has complete half shafts, so the diff cannot be delivered with oil in it, as it has no axles. Backlash comes from two areas, both of which can be checked "on car". True, you cannot get a definitive C&P backlash reading, but you can tell if it is going to be good enough, and you can certainly tell if it is going to be different to the one that came out. Ben.

: Censored: Diff clunk/ whine ( May the Force Be with you)

why well it goes like this 4th diff 3rd tail shaft 2nd radiator 3rd internal a/c fan 2nd boot rubber seals 1st steering rebuild 1st clutch replacement (broken spring from new) 1st gear box fix 4th tail shaft balance 2nd battery 3rd window switch controller. 3rd brake machining (to stop shake ) 2nd fly wheel 3rd water pump / rings 2nd exhaust pipe rattle fix 3rd month (collective time at dealer service ) 2nd car yes the missus who normally drives the silver lemon car now has bought a Expensive Daewoo coupe. The car(the lemon) makes more noise inside at 80kmh than my 10 year old 500,000kms Landcruser which has 3 diffs.

Ford CRC (BLESS THEM ) told me that it was ok that I found it difficult to talk on the mobile and that Its a sports car "you should expect more noise from a sports car "(have owned many before)

Further to this they stated "you only notice the noise because you are looking for it"

Apparently so was the guy who rejected the ford as a trade in suggesting I bring it back for a better price "when I got it fixed under warranty" CRC implied I didn't know what I was talking about when I suggested I would go away if they purchased a diff from another maker.

Well lots of luck.

AS for FORD CRC my comment is one from a simple guy descended from a family of English

& Scottish engineers including Albert Hotchkiss the inventor of the Hotchkiss drive (better known as the modern differential ) ILL BE BACK

Ian

Hi Ian,

Welcome to the forum, sorry to hear your tale of woe. IMO its all too common as is the attitude to the problems you have experienced. There is only one solution, if you can afford to, sell the bas*ard.

Let you know tommorrow afternoon guys :ermm:

Weeeeeelllllll JB.

How is it, no news is usually bad news in FoMoCo land.

Well guys, I know you have been patiently waiting, in fact I think Mondie has been secretly hunting me down! :spoton:

Anyway the new diff is definately the best one I have had. It has changed the driving characteristics of the driveline completey. It gives me the ability to change gear with some confidence that it's not going to sound like the diff has fallen out!

Basically I have found:

- The Driveline feels alot 'Tighter' if that makes sense. It seems to not have the slack in it it used to.

- It does not have the dealy that it had when rolling along and applying the pedal. It used to snap back, clunk then get on it's way. The drive is now there when you immediately press the pedal.

- I have managed to get it to clunk, however it is certainly not as common as my previous diff, maybe a 1 in 30 gear changes rather than a 6 in 10. I believe that this is now just a characteristic of the Ford Driveline being :pooh: to start with.

- The diff whine has basically gone. I can slightly hear it if I listen hard enough, however being that my ears are now 'tuned' to the noise I suppose I am looking for it. If I was to put anyone else in the car I would doubt they would be able to understand what I was on about. So I have to factor in a slight bias towards this. :ermm:

Overall the driveline feels stronger, tighter and more responsive. It sounds stupid but this diff has made it a different car to drive. I could push for another one to try to completely get rid of any clunks, however I honestly believe that this is not achieveable. I would rate this diff an 8/10 where as the previous one was 2/10 so a very marked improvement! The only real problem she still seems to have is surging when off throttle (normally on an incline) this is still through the driveline with that 'Slackness' feeling. However any other time it feels relatively tight.

Guys if you feel it is not right, get it changed. The dealer cannot say there are no problems as this very common, my dealer has had at least a dozen T's in recently alone. Do what I did and write to Ford Customer service and CC your dealer.

Mondie, mate give me a call as I believe that there is light athe end of the tunnel for your problem, this diff has proved it, hang in there. I am happy to take you through it and put you in contact with the guy who looked after mine. If anyone else wishes to talk to me about it you can call me on 0417 516 017. However I will be OS as of Monday so talk to me before or when I get back.

Thanks guys. :)

For anyone ordering a new diff, get your service manager to Call the diff supplier NOT order it online as per normal procedure. Ask them to request a grade 10 diff as you have been mucked around and this is unacceptable for a new car. Do not settle for the standard procedure as you may receive a diff that is worse than what you had.

Thanks for the info JB, glad your problems are fixed, had my ute in for service yesterday and complained about diff whine and they agreed and ordered a new diff for me, I'm not sure how it was ordered but I will be ringing them tomorrow and asking for a grade 10 diff

Well mate, you had me in suspense.

Now that l have read your thesis l know why it took so long to post the results :flippingfinger:

Good on you for having the patience to see it through JB, l will definetely call you to find out who this rare, caring dealer is. It took 2 attempts but you got one that doesnt clunk OR whine!! And what year is this 2004 :msm:

Its interesting that you say the tighter driveline has greatly improved the driving experience. l have thought this all along and that's why the sh!t diff in my car farks me off so much, it spoils an otherwise good effort.

Now to get the gearbox sorted, any update on that?
