Cro....or whoever ???

Now that I am the proud owner of a handheld CB for our beloved Turbo cruises, I find myself cruising to work and surfing through the various channels as a way of passing time in the Sydney traffic. Can someone please enlighten me on the following ponderances that I ponder upon :

When using the Duplex Repeater Channels ( eg 07 in Sydney ), what determines who can be heard amongst all of the people trying to have their say ? Is it a case of he with the most powerful transmitter reigns supreme.....or is it first in ?

There always seems to be a "raving" lunatic who manages to hog the channel and waffle on and on about nothing.....something that appears to be the case on several channels.

With a handheld Scanner ( eg Uniden 044 ), is there any chance of being heard by others or am I wasting my endless talents and wit on myself ?

A brief summary would be appreciated.

Honest Gaza

First of all, when you use a repeater channel (chans 1 - 8) make sure you turn the "duplex" function on.

Repeaters are similar to a UHF CB with two antenna's.

For this example we'll use channel 7.

Every time you send a signal on channels 1 - 8 (and duplex is enabled) you are actually sending a transmission on channel 37 to one of the repeaters antenna's.

Then the repeater takes the transmission from Channel 37 and broad casts it to channel 7.

If you don't make use of the duplex function you will only transmitt to people located 4 - 8 kms around you.

The UH-044 CB is good enough to transmitt on repeater channels all round Sydney. When I used it I got as far as Campbelltown and was still able to hear people talkin on 7.

Sydney has two repeater channels, ch1 (repeater is in hurstville), and ch7 (repeater in pennant hills).

Now for the strength question.

If you and a friend were sitting next to eachother and transmitting on the same channel (with the same type of CB), the person that transmitted first would get the signal through.

On the repeaters, it's whoever gets in first as well.

On general CB channels, it's the person with the most powerful CB that gets through.

That is why on cruises you will notice whoever has an in-car CB can hog the CB channel.

Thanks Cro.

Does your explanantion of power strength also apply to the repeater channels ?

( ie. me with the Handheld, you with the In-car both transmitting on Ch 7 )

Can you also explain what is meant by "dropping carriers".

Occasionally you can hear one of the other users saying "who is dropping carriers".

With CB setups Cro - whats a good package/brand to get??? .... that's prolly like asking "whats a good computer to buy" ha.. but ill ask anyway. :P

Mum and dad use Uniden on the farm - whats your opinions on them???

I'm looking for an aerial that I can detach if need be without 2 much fuss - good range...mid priced model...what would I be looking at roughly???

Also - if u can give me the right price can I buy it off u??? I remember ages ago you saying that you can get good prices on the CB stuff....or is this just me rembering the way I'd like things to be as to what they actually are

This post is getting more incomprehensible the more I write....I'd better stop now. :Imwifhim:

Dropping Carriers means that someone is transmitting without talking thus other people cannot talk. It really annoys other radio users especially if its done on a repeater channel

No, on repeaters power does not matter.

I've only used unidens mate, and havent found a single problemwith them.

With my 6db GME aerial I was able to get and transmitt a signal to about 30kms away.

Unfortunately I cant get good prices anymore as DSE now has new management and they are pricks :(

Id recommend checking out my site www.gadan.info/cb for some info.

You got my number, give us a call and I'll explain things further. Im finding it hard to type atm...

Is there some way of being able to hook or pair up two aerials at all?

Say a 3Db aerial for around the hills and a 9Db for good range out on the plains?

Aside from all the big uglies hanging off the car?

Lumpen,

I am not 100% on the UHF, but I did have a switch for my 18ft and 6ft CB ariels in my old car many years ago.

You will loose some power from the loss with the connections. It would be better to get a universal base and just unscrew and swap with the required ariels, it is also good to stop them being nicked.
