Hello I have just joined the forum so any Advice is helpful, I have just brought a 2003 BA Xr6 turbo lastnight but have been experiencing some form of boost cut, I go to floor and it hits gate, but then it starts make this unearthly spitting & spluttering noise, it boosts casually at 5psi but then spikes majorly to around 10-15psi and that's when the sputtering occurs, I have been told to look at a smaller wastegate spring and also a tune, it did also recently have a front mount intercooler installed so I don't know if that affects it or not, I am not sure on where to go from here so figured I'd come here and ask the pros,

Regards

Amateur here but, How big is the list of mods on it? I'd be grabbing my air compressor, dialling back the pressure regulator on it and testing the opening pressure for the wastegate as it is. Don't know what a stock wastegate is for a ba...6psi? if all good, unplug the boost controller electric plug, test that pressure on the intake side of the controller gets to the wastegate without leaks, then take it for a drive with the controller still deactivated and see if you can get it to overboost again. If no, then I'd head down the route of it being a tune issue, because the boost controller is delivering more boost than desired. If yes....ask someone else cause I dont know.

Regarding the spitting and spluttering noise...are we talking aggressive popping from the exhause or misfiring? I got my fg a year ago and right from the word go it had a misfire under high boost that was fixed by closing up the spark plugs a little bit.

Sounds like the car is already modified and then they were taken out and it was sold to you... I'd be asking the previous owner some serious questions.

I agree with @k31th on this one. Without sounding rude because my intention isn't to be, did you do your homework on the purchase of this? Sounds like you didn't check out the car much, test drive or ask the prev owner about its current running state.

Sounds to me like its hitting some sort of boost cut, or isn't tuned for the mods it has.

Step 0 stop driving it

Step 1 you must find out whats been done to the car

Step 2 + will depend on the outcome of prev steps

FTFY

No need to stop driving it, but bringing it onto boost and it have it boost cut all the time isn't ideal.

From the post it seems this has an external gate but that doesn't change things much. The wg plumbing needs to be checked first, it might just have a line off or a split in a line. Check from the turbo to the boost solenoid and to the wg fitting. If the lines are ok then move onto checking other things.

If it's external gate, open the top of the gate and see what springs are in there. Based on experience I would yeet the biggest spring in there and just run the smallest. It will likely need a bit of a tune and there is also a chance that it will be completely fine. You have to check it though, no ifs or buts, before giving it a hiding. It could be that the boost cut is saving you from a broken engine. Save this step for last.

If it's an internal gate then it may have a farked diaphragm and that will cause the issue at hand. You can check this by putting 5psi of pressure to the actuator. Even a bike pump will do the trick for testing purposes. If it's hissing then it's safe to say it's stuffed.

It might just need a set of plugs in it that are properly gapped and/or a set of coils. It may well be tuned to 15psi but over time the coils/plugs have worn out and it's only just started missing, hence the owner sold it.

Check all this stuff and let us know what the verdict is. It's a very easy thing to get to the bottom of when you know how and I have no doubt we will get you sorted.

This ^^^ ... I know of  a Stinger with a long list of mods that were not disclosed to the new owner , he filled it with 91 and then gave it the beans and an hour later grenaded the engine...

WMI was connected to the original owners phone and the 23psi tune was still in the ecu for the test drive...

Live and learn.
