Hey guys, for the unbelievers like me, that dont believe that a CD ROM can make CD go bang have a look at these pics!

The first one is what I saw when I opened the Drive after it went WHIIIIIIIIRRRR------CRUNCH!

This is why CD drives are maxxing out at 52x. The rotational speeds of these suckers at around 8,000 to 10000 RPM is just too high for some media.

What you've experienced isn't all that uncommon.

I thought CD's ran at around 500 rpm.

Is that incorrect?

I'm going from memory here.... but I think you're right in so far as the normal operating speed is around 5000rpm because they usually operate at anywhere from 24x to 40x. However, the 52x figure is a max / burst speed and the unit will try to attain that. If the disk is out of balance or scratched, it will slow down to the above speeds (an most disks are not perfectly balanced). But at the 52x speed that the disk will be spinning at for a while... things can go bang.

serves you right for buying that new Peter Andre album...

Andrew

But all the Peter Allen and Kylie ones that Ken sent me don't do this :(

Neither should the ones you get (regularly) from the Blue Oyster Bar. :thumbsup:

I found an interesting article I remembered reading on this topic.

//theage.com.au/articles/2002/12/09/1039379779472.html

I like the bit that says:

At revolutions of about 200 metres per second, today's state-of-the-art lead-foot drives approach the speed of sound - 340 metres per second through air at room temperature - subjecting the spinning disc to a force 1500 times that of gravity, researchers have found.

Looks like it has potential to become a coffee cup holder. :lol:

Hmmm....I've actually had that call a few years back..."Umm, my coffee cup holder is broken, you know, the tray that goes in and out of the large box"......lol.

My Canadian counterparts have had a better one.

Some goose rang into the Care Centre to report that his machine was "ON FIRE!!!" :o

The first-call guy told him to ring the fire brigade. :ermm::ta:
