Oil pump clearances

Doesn't seem to be much concrete info that I can see so far. Puff was good enough to link me to the Boundary vid where they gave a wide range of tolerances, but with that they said each tolerance range gives different characteristics. Farken hard to decipher when they give out cryptic info like that. What is in range and what is out of range? Or perhaps more succinct; how long is a piece of string?

 

I think my best cause of action is to scour multiple OEM workshop manuals until I find one that has oil pump specs that I can use to check against OEM. I have reached out to Empire but have yet to here back. 

 

What you are looking at here is an FG oil pump housing with around 12 years of k's on it and brand new Empire Elite oil pump gears sitting in place. All dissembled and cleaned to a high spec before measuring. Using a metric feeler gauge set and precision ground parallel for my straight edge.

 

FYI 0.1mm is close enough to 4 thou.

The video by Travis R tells you what you need to know. It is straight to the point, shows how to measure, tells the ranges for the measurements and chucks in other pertinent info. Other manufacturers have info available and the main difference is the tip clearance, it's bigger on aftermarket gears. There is fark all you can do about the tip clearance as that is how the gears are made. If you want to change that you have to buy every gear set available and pick the one you want.

 

Based on the numbers you've provided it is good to go. Every one likes a tip in the morning, don't smooth out the inside of the pump body, they are already thin and you risk it cracking or exploding.

Cool, close enough. Tip to tip he mentions about 7 thou max for his gear, and that oems will have a little more. I'm at around 9 thou. Something to keep in the back of my mind I suppose.

A toyota corolla oil pump has 1.6 to 6.3 thou tip clearance new, honda jazz is 1 to 6 with a service limit of 8 thou, old school turbo 2j supra is 2.2 to 12.8 with a maximum of 15.7 thou. There are heaps of resources online, google "oil pump clearance" then click images and you can see dozens of results.

 

Hp Junkie have a special at the moment, only $1400ish for their billet pump.

Best I get around to wiring up my oil pressure sensor and hook it my DLP-8.

 

7075 is a very high grade of aluminium. They didn't fark around with that design then. Very very noice piece. 

 

The adjustable relief would be a nice addition to add to the OEM pump. Obviously can't go too crazy, the housing won't take it. I think I might keep that as a project for when I have nothing to do.

Just an info post. Installed the old stock high km gears for a test, tip clearance is 0.13mm I.e. about 0.1mm tighter than the Empire gears. Everything else was pretty well the same. Will keep an eye on things and see what the oil pressure ends up settling at.

Mo info mo better. I wouldn't be too worried about 0.1mm difference. Take this with a grain of salt but I heard billet gears leave room for growth when they're at operating temp.
