Ended up taking the whole head to Powerhouse engines. John reckons he can get it back to in about a week which suits me perfect.

How do I clean the carbon build up off the pistons and clean the block surface? Was thinking a dremel with a scotch disc shouldn't be to hard on it as long as I use common sense.

You can clean the pistons with whatever you want. Don't let the carbon and associated juices into the engine, they are abrasive.

You can't prepare anything for an MLS gasket by hand, it has to be machined. They need 20 RA or less to seal properly.

I know some folks will slap in a cleaned up second hand MLS gasket absolutely covered with some sealant and say she'll be right and it may well be ;)

20ra is about a thousands of an inch average roughness I'm reading from google. That's not very much lol. If I'm within 2 thou of an inch on the lathe with emery paper finishing I call it good. I've got a fine machining stone, I'll rip that over it nve its clean and see what it looks like. If there's heaps of peaks and valleys I'll get it machined. Fingers crossed I can pull magic out my arse.

Haha yerp like I said it's not a job you can achieve by hand. Sure you can get an area of the deck to that finish but the deck has to be level too which is generally made worse when hand finishing. If you insist on installing a new mls gasket like this then use a fair whack of hylomar at the least. I know the gaskets say to install them dry as they have their own coating, but they also require a certain finish to seal.

I wasn't going to mention the other ways of sealing an mls gasket cos it's not how you should do it, but I'd rather see your gasket seal than have you waste your money and time. This is the stuff you can use to seal up a second hand, completely stripped and clean mls gasket with a hand finished iron block. Obviously you can use it with a new gasket too.

So yeah it's not recommended but it works so it's not dodgy either, I guess it's somewhere in between. Fwiw the Athena gasket ($120 more than a cometic mls) is composite/steel ring and will seal up against a clean used deck surface. Keep that in mind before you go yanking the bottom end out...haha you shouldn't have pulled the head off either but we're here now.

or just get the block and head decked so the MLS gasket seals properly... not a huge expenditure if the engine is out and apart anyway.

Lol, yeah I'm a do first think later kind of guy. I'd be lonely if the mrs didn't adjust to live with it. It's a bloody disease I tell ya.

Yeah, that's what will end up happening I reckon. Only the bellhousing bolts and engine mounts to go. Probably under an hours work. Will spend 4 hours just to clean the deck so its probably time well spent. Still had to raise the motor anyway to do oil pump gears.

Ah, remerbered what I was going to ask now after your response this morning about gaskets...

Lets pretend I'm not getting it built, I was hoping to use the gasket that comes in the permatec VRS kit. For 450rwkw was hoping that would be ok? I am upgrading the head studs to ARP.

And I just called the engine machinist to organise decking my block. Had a quick go with the scotch brite, WD40 and machining stone. Fark that, my back will be toast by the end of the day.
