Hi all. Not really knowledgeable when I comes to this situation. But anyway.

Ba xr6turbo. Yes has hi ks(377 000)

Anyway checked oil other day. Was about 1 liter low ..thought ok...only been about 3500 ks since service. Anyway topped it up and then decided to check manifold bolts and found the turbo compressor housing pretty black and oily. When I did oil change I used a nuelon additive which I haven't in past so wondering if this has cause oil to run out etc

Now there's zero smoke comming from exhaust but exhaust does get very black. Very quickly...wiped other day and today it's black again.

Now car goes great. Minimal shaft play in turbo...turbo is about 230 000 ks old give or take prob less can't remeber.has earls kit and no factory filter

Have attached a couple pics. Was after I wiped what I could but yeah.

Question.......turbo seals gone? Or should I try a different oil and see if that helps?

And if turbo gone anyone used the eBay cores and any feed back haha?

Cheers

Given that no mods are listed here is some info...

Did you service it yourself or get a shop to do it? Some workshops don't actually fill the engine to the full line to save money. One litre over 10,000 cars serviced per year is a decent chunk of change. Anywhere between the low and full line is fine so perhaps that's what happened. Maybe the person filling the oil did a friday arvo job?

You said it isn't smoking so the black in the exhaust isn't oil and is unrelated to the compressor housing oil.

It's normal for the comp housing to have oil in it due to the way the pcv circuit is set up.

So yerp with those km I would expect more blow by and hence more oil in the intake.

@k31th tried the cheapest chra he could find and it bit him in the arse so don't do that. You can get a genuine chra for about $1000. Make sure you diagnose it properly because you don't want to chuck a new chra in it for no reason. I personally would look elsewhere for the oil loss at this stage.

Thanks.

No mods done...well guess you could technically call mods but nothing major. Just normal cat back exhaust..growler intake

But no tuning etc.

Anyway last time I checked there was only minimal oil in there which as said. Is normal nothing like this. So it's quite possibly burning the oil in engine and pumping through?

I can see any noticeable smoke. In saying that though under hard boost I'm unsure as normally looking at road but from idle/reveling there's no smoke

Blackness on exhaust does seem little oily aswell but given with the  condensation from it it's probly makeing it look that way.

If I was to just replace the core (say I got a good one decent one) are they hard to do? I've herd they get rusted on?

The only way oil gets into the compressor housing like that is through the pcv circuit. Check the pcv valve and the one way valve. If they are rooted it could push oil through the front vent and into the intake. Pull the hose off the crossover going to the turbo and see how much oil is there, it'll look the same as the compressor housing.

Usually you will see smoke at some point if it's dumping it into the exhaust through the turbo, so I don't think it's actually doing that.

Hard is relative man. Not hard if you're a mechanic or have done it before. For everyone else, make sure you have a couple of days up your sleeve. Yeah the turbine housing gets rusted on, soak it with wd40 or the like, then you can loosen it up with a rubber mallet.
