APS auto upgrade

There is a carbon based band that is the latest material to use. For the rear band you can use the kevlar.

I know alot of people are dying to know, but I have spent ages R&Ding this trans. I know the forum is a place to share info and I usually do but not this stuff.

Give it 6 months and we will see how it goes. Althought this mod helps heaps, at the end of the day as APS said the trans will probably get screwed in other ways for extreme horsepower applications.

For medium horsepower applications I think it will have its place and keep the trans bands and clutches in good condition. But there is still a long road ahead.

A former uni colleague of mine is the “calibrator” for the auto gearboxes at BTR. When I told him what people were doing to their XR6 turbo’s his jaw dropped. He himself can’t believe that the auto gearboxes have lasted this long under the power some guys are putting through them. The sad part is that BTR could’ve easily used “high energy” bands and better materials but Ford wanted the cheapest possible box. The reasoning is that any box that fails within a specified period of time must be replaced by BTR, free of charge. Basically $50 more in materials would’ve meant a much tougher and reliable gearbox.

As stated above, he also correlated that increased line pressure and much tighter shifting would initially help improve the situation. But when the friction lining in the bands wear out then nothing would stop the box disintegrating.

Can this friend of yours from BTR source these parts at all to upgrade the auto's? Or can he recomend what be changed? Maybee if he can I'm sure we could get quite a few of us thegether for some sort of a group order to get these parts in bulk and therefor cheaper. :pray:

This would be great. It would be good if an auto trans specialist was reading this too. Maybe we could organise a discount for a bulk rebuild. We could probably organise quite a few cars.

I spoke with Con at C&V yesterday, he rekons the box in Vics car will cope with the extra power and there car is in the 10's

So far all I know about the mods to their box is that its had better bands and clutches fitted and the oil passages have been extensively modified.

The clutch friction material is pretty OK I heard but can be improved upon for a performance auto.

A few years ago a batch of Raybestos brand performance clutchs were made but in the last year they sold out.

I am waiting for one of the large trans suppliers to order another batch of performance clutch plates before I start building my performance box. Basically I'm doing what C&V are doing, new band and clutch material, modifying the oiling passages, increasing line pressure and modifying other bits and pieces.

I dont know if this applies to the BA (I think it does but it applies to EA to AU). Dont load a modified turbo up in 4 gear. There maybe a nylon checkball that gets dislodge and causes problem. In the rebuilt this gets replaced with a ballbearing.

My auto mods will be either $1500 or $1950 , depanding on whether or not I have to replace the clutches. I cant wait. All I seem to do is wait for things.

I think my auto could be nearly dead. :( When parking in the driveway last night I heard a nasty slow knocking sort of sound. After doing numerous tests it can only be the transmission. I was supposed to take the car to Ford on Wed for it to be test driven at the You Yangs, I dont think it will be going now. I will take it to the dealer tomorrow and see what happens. As Ford have already acknowledged that the auto had a problem by changing the valve body and the fact that this didn't completely rectify the problem I hope they will put in a new auto. I will let you all know how it goes. While I'm there I'll try to get the windscreen whistle fixed too. It used to happen at 160kmph+ and they said they wouldn't fix it. It now does it at 120kmph+ so hopefully they will now.
