After getting the ok from the accounts department (wife), for bigger injectors it looks like I might need to spend it upgrading the auto instead. For those that already have the APS upgrade how does it compare to before. How different are the shifts and do you experience any slippage under full acceleration in any of the changes?

For those that know or Peter if your reading this, what is involved with the APS auto upgrade?I imaging that the line pressure would be increased. Is this done by using spacers or changing the springs? What else is done? Are the friction surfaces (clutches) replaced with better items? I have read that its $600, is this correct?

Are there any other auto transmission workshops or other tuning houses doing these or similar upgrades? If they are how does the car feel compared to when standard and what sort of prices are involved?

Good questions GEEA.... there's quite a few of us wanting to know the same thing.

Hope we get some substantive feedback.

An annoying issue when wanting to drive enthusiastically in the XR6T auto, is the slight delay from selecting the next gear to the actual change (especially on down changes). I have a shift kit mod on my vette, and it is almost instantaneous, but does cause a fair bit of stress on the driveline (not to mention locking up rears when under heavy brakes  )

To those that have any auto mods for the XR6T, does the response time from selecting the next gear (on down changes as well as up changes) improve AS well as firm up the actual shift for a faster gear change?

and.... have you experienced any undesired effects after the mods?

cheers

tom

At the APS day in Melb. last Saturday we were told that the auto mod quickens the shifts in all modes.

Alxr6t, were you told what was changed in the auto?

Geea.

They increase line pressure via the valve body I think. I'm not sure if they replace the valve body or modify it. David did say that the pressure isn't increased all the time, only for the shifts.

Geea :o

Geea, the auto issue is one which is fraught with danger particularly if the auto has had a hard life at an increased torque level. With these cars we now recommend that the trans is stripped and inspected to check the condition of the clutches and bands and to replace any torched parts prior to upgrading to the shift kit.

On new cars with the auto in good condition we can do the auto upgrade without stripping the auto trans to inspect, and the cost is approx $660.

If the auto is not fully checked we have no way of knowing if the auto will shift how we intend it to, as once the gearbox has flared a number of times the auto clutches are generally damaged and need replacing.

The Falcon BA series auto trans is quite complex and we are continuing to fine tune the auto upgrade and testing new parts to find the optium solution to transfer high torque levels :o .

We are currently developing unichip technology to enable electronic mapping of line pressures which in conjunction with mechanical upgrades should provide the ultimate solution to speed up the gear shifts to provide crisp changes and look after the auto. Sorry I cant give you a time frame for this new product.

Thanks for the reply Peter. :hag:

If an auto has had a hard life before the APS auto upgrade is installed what are the likely extra costs and changes that would be involved?

If the clutches have worn or other parts need replacing what are the range of prices and what would be the maximim cost.

Thanks, Geea. :o

Sorry I over looked that in my last post. We do the valve body mods and trans oil in the $660 cost, we are also in the process of completing an oil cooler system for the auto, no pricing for that at the moment.

On the auto upgrades this is what we offer to APS customers in Melbourne, as to what dealers charge interstate I cant comment on as we have no control or input to specification of the auto upgrade.

Geea its impossible to quote on auto trans rebuilds before stripping and inspecting the transmision, as we dont know what parts need to be replaced and what does not. :(

A full rebuild could be as high as $4000 depending upon what parts are utilised for the rebuild. In some instances there are improved non genuine parts available which can save you money though more often than not the improved parts can be very expensive and difficult to obtain.

To give you an idea I have spent up to $15,000 on auto transmissions in the past to cope with very high torque, so the sky is the limit when it comes to auto trans upgrades.
