I believe the main problem here is that our transport ministers aren't interested in cars, to them cars are just a tool to get from one point to another, they can never understand the enjoyment we get from our cars.

"It becomes a hobby," said Sam. "Some people do up houses, we spend time and money on cars."

this is the same line I delivery my parents, when they ask me why I waste my money on my car/bike.

I would NEVER agree with the crown taking peoples cars, NEVER! that's completely unreasonable.

Dave.

Whilst I don't condone street racing, it does sound like the people who got caught in the roundup got hammered with everything they could be done for. I think it would be good for the police to organise and run track/drag days aimed at getting these people to have fun legally. Who knows it might even be good PR.

That said there will always be an element who will try to do stuff the wrong way and they deserve what they get.

Ouch that fence hurts

...and for the Police to enter a vehicle as well...I have seen pics where a Police vehicle has been used in a legal meet...that always gets the

Sorry guys

For me being a Policeman is to actively catch criminals and do my bit to preserve/maintain the quality of life that the majority enjoy.

I didn't join to be an educator...I don't believe it is possible to legislate human behaviour because the community should be able to regulate itself.

This is why laws are in place - it is the defined activity determined by the majority.

I prefer to catch law breakers - use my discretion when necessary- not educate adults.

I'm not a there to be a good example - I shouldn't have to show other adults how to behave themselves or use commonsense - that is what the community is for.

There's plenty of places to do this stuff with all their half-witted mates legally

Is this calling all people who do burnouts halfwits? I'm just needing clarification before I go off my brain.

I have first hand experience with this.

My 22yo son was caught 2 years ago. We tried to discourage the activity, as we knew he had attended a number of times, but never raced, as he didn’t have a car. He bought a car, and then actually raced it 3 days later in an industrial area at 2a.m one Saturday night at the back of Blacktown. There was a police ambush and he was caught, but the other car escaped, after being chased by the police.

The car was impounded for 3 months, and license lost for 12 months as a mandatory suspension, plus concurrently served 3 months suspension for 90kmph over limit.

Strangely, the modified 180sx (in my company name) was not defected.

There was a fine, plus legal costs.

It’s a very tough penalty, and he won’t do it again.

A mandatory 12-month suspension is stupid IMHO, 6 months is more realistic as a first offence.

There is too much temptation for the young people to drive unlicensed, and I know of kids who been caught driving unlicensed, then found themselves in much deeper trouble. I know of 1 young person banned from driving for over 10 years (lucky not to be in jail), others on home detention, and it gets worse. Sure it’s their fault, but the current system is not working.

For these kids it’s a bit of a game, there’s the thrill of the organizing, the CBs, watching others hot cars, meeting others, the early hours of the morning, knowing that they’re actually doing something unlawful, the thrill of the scatter when someone finds that the police are on their way.

They see it as harmless fun, the authorities don’t.

There way well be a crackdown, but the activities won’t stop.

My advice to the young people is to do track days, carting, or drag racing and join car clubs or groups if possible. Unfortunately, they see track days as requiring a bit too much effort, which is unfortunate, as that’s where they really learn how their cars handles and brakes.

Mr Wilson said parents could lose their vehicles if their children were caught twice, and also warned of the dangers involved.

Well that's DUM!

Why not do it in a stolen car then....

Or a Hire car

They shouldn't be able to confiscate something that isn't the property of the offender, when the legal owner is at home unaware.

And the community elected the polies who employed you to do just that, be the good example! If the community can't look to Mr Plod for an example, who do we look to?

That sort of attitude is why I have little respect for most cops(not pointing a finger as I don't know you plonky). But when I see them speeding to get back to the station for lunch and then booking me for speeding after lunch! not good PR!

You ARE the example, appointed by us, the community.

If it WAS harmless nobody would care, but people die, that's why it should be stopped.
