Another cam timing issue

Sorry I meant in order to be able to see the lower mark and put on a new lower sprocket, guide and chains etc...

No mate, just a flex telescopic mirror & torch will do the trick

I have an FG. Do I need to take the sump off to remove and reinstall the timing cover.

Nope. There are some bolts at the front of the motor that go through the sump and into the timing cover.

 

Do you have the workshop manual pdf that's been floating around for a while?

Yeah the manual says to remove the sump.

Haha ok. You don't have to remove the sump. There are 4 little bolts underneath that you undo and if the rest is undone from the front, including the idler pulley cos that holds the timing cover on too, you can gently lever the timing cover forward and it'll come off.

 

This is assuming you've already got the rocker cover off

What's the best way to crack the crank pulley bolt on an auto without damaging the pulley

Bumping it sounds extreme, Especially as I have a button start on the F6

Use a stubby rattle gun if you don't wanna bump it. Nothing wrong with bumping it off anyway.

So yeah it jumped a tooth. Atomic kit finally arrived. I've pulled the old chain off to replace everything. When the tensioner came off the piston fell out and almost into the sump. I thought they weren't supposed to do that. On closer inspection it appears the teeth on the catch stopping it thrusting forward have warn off down. Am I right? Is this broken and I should buy a new one. If so should I get an atomic one or an OEM.

I read some threads on here where people were saying OEM but that was a few years ago.

when you said "piston" I thought you meant an actual piston... then I saw the picture, so of course you mean the solenoid... get a new one.
