The overboost / Boost error limit is too close and will need to be lifted ;)

It happens sometimes mate….

Just also looking at some preventive maintenance is it worth replacing the factory actuator? I know turbosmart sell them with different PSI ranges but I have heard a lot of people say they are no good and really hard to control the boost? Are these any good? If not can anyone point me in the right direction on finding a genuine garret replacement? Can’t seem to find a listing?

Cheers

Stock actuator should be fine on your turbo and you are probably just adding headaches to go aftermarket. If it's working no need to replace it.

When mine died I had trouble finding it online, so rang MTQ and they posted one. Was $120 or so from memory.

Doesn't need any preload adjustment - just bolts on where the old one came off and won't affect your tune. Bit of a job as you need to pull the turbo off.

Don’t replace the FG turbo actuator with anything except for a Genuine new standard actuator when the following apply

Stock FG GT3576

Don't want to have to work out correct preloads

Don’t want to have to have the tune checked/put on Dyno

The FG standard turbo and actuator can be replaced in 30 minutes from under the car when you have a hoist and the car is cold.

What I will say is the standard FG actuator is bloody good and rarely fail so if you’re seeing reasonably high boost the actuator is probably okay

So just thought I would post an update on this. Went back to tuner today ran it up on the dyno and it replicated the issue I was having. Now bear with me my understanding of what the issue is.

He basically said that my car was super sensitive to the gear ratios set out in the pcmtec map.  Basically there are set parameters from pcmtec for certain types of tunes like boost per gear. This generic code with set parameters is used in all falcons when doing a boost by gear tune. Apparently my car didn’t like it and he was trying to figure out with pcmtec as to why. Now he adjusted some things and got it holding boost and behaving perfect on the dyno. Though yew beauty. Took it for a drive seemed great then got out on the highway and same thing in 5th and 4th gear. Prob worse. Overboosting, surging between boost levels you name it. It even boosted to nearly 20 psi in 3rd gear in the low boost tune. WTF.

anyway heading back there tomorrow as it was late and getting rid of boost by gear tune and just running the high and low boost as apparently the issue is just from this tune. I don’t really need it or care and would rather the car running right.

do many ppl actually run boost per gear? If I was going to nail it I’d want it on high boost anyway.

that’s my understanding of what’s going on I’m sure it might make more sense to some of the gurus in here. Any thoughts?

I run boost by gear...all the boost in every gear.

So yerp anyhow basically whats happening is the boost aint tuned right. What the tuner should be doing is checking the vehicle on the road and fine tuning it, after it's been roughed out on the dyno. Boost by gear can be set up properly and it really is a case of getting back to basics with boost control.

I've tuned cars on the dyno and they seem fine, but when you go for a drive you can see that the boost control needs a bit of adjustment.

Yer I gave him a bit of a roasting so I’m sure he will do it tomorrow.

My understanding of boost by gear is that the boost level rises based on gear or speed to assist with traction and load.

Wouldn’t the high boost tune have all the boost in all gears?

it’s really surprising if it’s the tuner. This place has been operating for o we a decade all they do is ford and the joint is packed out week on week on week. They have a good rep and lots of known cars come out of there.

I must be unlucky or something

If they had checked it on the road they would have seen the issue and not sent it out farked. Whether it's tune related or something else, doesn't change the fact that they let it go in that condition, more than once.

Hopefully they can sort it for you sooner rather than later.
