Reputable tuner singing a different tune to the forum...

Hi everyone,

A reputable tuner (not wanting to name names but comes highly recommended on the forum) has told me that with a high flow cat, 3.5inch x-force catback and antz intercooler that a tune will not stop over-boost from occuring, especially during cold nights. I'm told that the only option is to get a waste gate and turbo actuator to stop a mechanical problem from eventuating.

Can anyone shed some light here?

Build list:

high flow cat

3.5 inch xforce catback

stage 2 antz intercooler (to be fitted with piping kit)

kpm1000-s

walbro 460

Valve springs

Head studs

Billet gears oil pump

if you're not happy with what they've said and are happy with another tuner, then go with the other one.

Why would you not listen to the advice of a reputable tuner? There's a reason they've got a good reputation :dontknow:

Reputable doesn't mean infallible, and it also means extra work for them so they possibly have an incentive to over engineer it. There's a lot of knowledge and experience here so I'm curious to get a few opinions

I mean... That sounds pretty accurate to me?

Its extremely common knowledge that the stock turbo's on these cars do not work well over 16ish (numbers can vary) due to the wastegate setup not being efficient. Small wastegate port and all that.

Hence the extremely common mod that is to port the wastegate and install a bigger flapper. Commonly dubbed "flapper mod".

You only need the flapper mod at lower boost levels 8-14 or so. You don't need it with anying above 16 ish but you will need an appropiate actuator at that level 10,12,14 psi spring etc.

Right, but isn't the flapper mod to get more out of the stock turbo?

What if I'm happy at the 300-320 mark? Do I need to do the wastegate and flapper then?

It was recommended to me to do it, and I'm in that bracket. I didn't do it and Rob tuned it accordingly.

So no, not technically. But it'd definitely help 😋

How's your car running Biddie_fiddler? Any overboost issues on cold winter nights?

So I'll get it tuned to exactly 15 PSI and I'll be right, yeah? haha

I've hit upwards of 18psi on more than one occasion.... So if I was to do it again I'd do the flapper mod 😅

Max I've recorded is 21psi

Its tuned to 16psi
