Cheers mate they turned out pretty good. The money I spent on coating stuff and spray equipment was over half the cost of a set of top notch pistons but well worth it imo.

 

I've got some ceramic coat for the hot side so that'll be done one of these days. It's called Black Velvet C-7300.

Pistons are fully cured and came out pretty good. Dunno how much it helps to have a good gun but I got a decent one anyway. Will give them a slight tidy up before assembly but for all intensive porpoises they're done :declare:

 

Measured up the bores and pistons and we're back down to 3.54 thou on 5 of them and 3.74 on 1. Bang on for reasonably quiet operation, the manufacturer recommends 4 thou and they were ok once warmed up, last time it was running. They were out at 5.9 thou after the tear down so pretty happy with how it came out.

Spent a whole bunch of time cleaning pistons, rods, rod bolts, gudgeon pins and clippy Mcclipfaces aka those bastard circlips to hold the pins in.

 

Turns out the std ring set I bought may have been for 10 over or something, cos the oil support rings didn't fit and the oil scraper rings were tight af. Long story short I'm reusing the oil rings and fitting a new compression and second rings to each cylinder.

 

Also measured the big end clearance which came out to 2 thou. Kinda tight for going hell for leather but completely fine.

Rods, pistons and rings assembled, fitted and torqued up. Next steps will be fitting the girdle and windage tray then onto the oil pump etc.

Ok pics here, don't mind the crap on the deck of the block, it's mainly just sticky tape jizz. It'll get a final clean when the head is ready to fit. Also looks like there is a decent amount of deck than can be removed for next time...

So yerp, same block, same pistons, just gave the bores enough of a hone to clean them up and add a crosshatch. Rings are 22 and 24 this time.

Cleaned the girdle, windage tray and upper sump. Windage tray still looks like it's got liver failure but it is clean lol. Fitted the girdle and windage tray then torqued the mains down to 90lb/ft. Pics cos pics

Look I personally believe that if you measure and know what to look for it's fine.

It's one of them things I believe engine builders have upsold for years because if something fccks up then they get blamed. (Putting stock size pistons in standard bores)


If the bore is round, no step and the right size still it should be ok. Nominal clearance is built into the piston and the slight wear in the bore just helps with the extra boost its going to see.

With a bit of luck and the inherit nature of a straight 6 being in balance, building a forged motor for a barra could be done cheap as. And it handling 6-700 kw isn't unrealistic when a stocker can handle in the 500 range.

Yeah I got lucky with this block, every other block I've measured would need a rebore to be done properly. Even after running it hard for a couple of years with over 150 dyno runs and many times more road pulls, the parts looked fine as far as wear goes. It has seen over 700awkw on a 4x4 roller dyno and I'll continue to push it hard when it's back together.

 

Haha yeah you're right, providing a few key areas are addressed you can do it on the cheap and no one would know, or could tell the difference when driving it.
