Was able to get a few photos of the chaos. Looks like the rod has snapped and punched a hole in both sides of the block and sump. Its cracked the rhs engine mounting plate and taken a decent chunk out of the left side too.

In terms of the small fire, it has melted the right side engine mount, melted the steering rack boot and melted the insulation for the power wire that runs from the fuse box to starter. Just a few weeks ago I saw motoring box fitted an extinguisher to the car and thought yeah ill just get one just in case. Didn't think I would need it and who knows if the fire could have gotten much worse however good to have something at least.

Thankfully I've got a few days on a hoist to remove the engine and figure out what I need to track down and then work out what I'm going to do for a replacement engine. Really the worst timing as a few weeks ago I paid for a 6r80 converter and was getting ready to finally get the zf built. 7dc5ba9c45080140f7fc5da8e99ac189.jpg131889fb1f4a7f08d5091be2a7436db5.jpgabd01438eee77bfe0024ee7256597292.jpg2793b02c3cf684a9db0c67af95275874.jpg9486a0194e66d2dcd43532658bfd1601.jpgf217941becc9207fd7acbf47f42b13e9.jpg

Engine back out, had to get a hand with the bonnet. Gave the engine bay and surrounding areas a massive de grease as oil and crud has worked it way into every little area possible. That piston looks like its shattered.. what went wrong?

Still wanting to move forward with the zf build I think I will be sourcing another green top and getting it back it.

Try and keep it on the budget side of things. Gap rings this time, bearings, gaskets etc. 8ccce074162a2f2f9433cce1cb3814f7.jpg9e12ba5f8f92c3e045b6cebd46987a61.jpg737cb140b3bf07b74040d6f395e0ff8c.jpg333243b17a0326125a5848b0198f55cd.jpg21598a1f36e22d4115ce422c9d990093.jpg30b12dc838e5f5bd0e5f862536d4bf78.jpg

Give it a clean then upload some super high quality pics from half a dozen angles. Give us some pics of the bore and rod as well. At first glance it looks rpm related, perhaps the piston was already overheated and wanted to keep going North when the crank and rod went South.

There will be bits of piston in your intake manifold so be sure to clean it right out if reusing it. Also check your turbine wheel, it would have had a tasty breakfast that day.

I did see some bits in the manifold and cleaned the shizen out of it while I was de greasing. I will have another look when the new engine goes in. Will need to check the turbo too maybe even pull the cooler too. Think I will just scrap the block mate, wont bother stripping it. However I think youre on the right track with the failure.
