dont stress about removing the covers & making the wheel fuse on. At my shop, we often find alloy wheels stuck to the hub. I think it is mainly because of the disimilar metals & rust developing. Anti-sieze definately helps, we just emery thu hubs a little before the go back on, ubt quite often, even with anti sieze they are stuck on again during next service. Another problme, is the open styl wheels. Mechanics dont have to take wheels of to check pads anymore, so often the wheels stick on because they dont get removed as often.

One thing to note though: we were working on a new porsche the other day that had pretty big wheels-I think 18 or 19s. very open styl wheel & one thing that really stood out was that the brake bleeder was really exposed through the wheels, would be easy to open the bleeder & cause dramas without even taking the wheel off, the black covers would prevent this.

anyway, just my 2 cents worth.

thanks guys :)

I'll consider painting them at some point.

maybe a nice silver or black.

Cheers,

Matt

You'll paint 'em like Gino when you get your bicycle wheels from Stevo the devo, but what colour will you use, don't ask Goldie!

Saleen, were you able to do this without taking off the calipers??

Dunno about Saleen but I left my calipers on and just rotated the disc as I painted. I used a piece of thin card board cut to the circumferance of the hub to stop overspray getting on the rotor face.

thanks CQAE, very imformative post, I assume by causing dramas with the brake bleeder you mean if some little so-an-so decided to cut it?

I'll keep that in mind... One thing I normally check when I get into my car is the pedal, (thank years of driving manuals for that) instead of pushing the clutch in I put the brake hard .. one would assume if it goes right to the floor there would obviously be brake problems :)

and Scotty, don't worry I don't think I'd be consulting goldie for colour choices :) LOL Goldie would be the ghetto pimp with his gold bling everywhere if he lived in da hood! :)

Thanks Benny too for the heads up, when I painted my calipers I used a similar setup for what you described above.. I'll just get more cardboard, got plenty of it downstairs from all our wedding presents :)

Mattson,

I did exactly the same as Benny, made a cardboard template of a half rotorand masked up the brake caliper. Then painted with VHT Brake Paint(designed to handle the heat) and just put the wheels on without locknuts to turn the rototrs. Also, prior to painting, I used a wire brush fitment in my drill to get rid of the surface rust, then repeatedly wiped the rotor over with a cloth to remove any loose rust.

Does any of this modern day paint actually last?

OK, call me stoopid, but how do you rotate the back wheel? Did you jack up both back wheels?

When I only have one back wheel jacked up, I cant rotate it due to the LSD.

I won't call you stupid, because you're one of my employees. But I will explain.

1) Grab a pack of Winnie Blue(or reds if out of stock)

2) When you're ready to spin it, release handbrake(only for models optioned with the working variety)

3) Put tranny into neutral.

4) Put wheel on(without wheelnuts) and turn like hell.(its not too hard to spin)

5) Go the pub.

Make sure this is done on a flat surface. Chock the front wheels if wench is naggin ya.
