Definitely agree with all Steve has said. The good thing is if you are looking at an FG, there's no transmission/engine strength issues or anything major. It's always diff bushes etc.

They wont feel quite as light as maybe what you are used to, but when you see the power you can get out of them with minimal modifications, you'll be smiling your head off. Good suspension improves them heaps. But obviously, keep in mind they are a well-sized sedan. Power wise, you'll be silly not to. If the turbo bug has bitten you, you'll drop 10K on an FG and have more power than you can even use on the road.

With a friendly nudge from myself and everyone on the forum, DO IT! :ok:

If buying auto....sort out a PWR heat exchanger...stock ones can break and cause 'milkshake' (coolant mixing in with trans fluid).

Can go air to oil cooler to 100% stop milkshake...but there's big arguments whether or not long term damage is done (ZF is super picky about temperatures I think....PWR heat exchanger functions like OEM). ZF autos are faster if doing drags.....manual for funs (although I think some manuals can have annoying clunks/vibrations at times).

You will LOVE the baby turbo rush in the FGs.....spanked one of your skylines the first week I bought mine :P but eventually mod bug will bight

Baby turbs can only be maxed around 320-330rwkw on 98 (360ish on e85)....bigger turbo on BF models can go signifcantly more....but more laggy (would describe it similar to jappies with peak boost around 3-4k...although these cars only rev out to 6.5 vs. 7 or 8 on the ricers. If you don't mind the slightly older shape....look at BF MKII Typhoons....bigger turbo and FPV goodness. But try and drive a few to really make up your mind (I tried BF MK II XR6T and then my FG XR6T...instant boost did it for me :P)

As PTR (Peter) has said, you can get some great numbers out of the small turbo's, that feel great on the street but still get some serious boogy. low 300kw's at the wheel is huge, will give you awesome mid range. And not knocking the jap cars at all, but unless you've had any huge powered ones, that'll be more than enough power.... (Until you get like the rest of us and just want more and more :P). The lag isn't that bad at all on the bigger turbo's (BA/BF + FG FPV's). Just depends if you want something with huge power, or something that still tromps most things but is really streetable and a great daily. Lot of factors to consider, but the search bar up top is always a helpful tool, otherwise plenty of us are happy to input and help with any advice.

Definitely buy one though :) + 1 for Auto.

Thanks for the great feedback guys.

My V36 Skyline 350GT (235kW) is currently the most powerful car I've driven, and it's incredibly linear and very responsive (both engine and gearbox with paddle shift). It's approx 190 rwkw.

What kind of stock rwkw power would I be looking at in an FG MK1 XR6 Turbo?

I'll definitely be purchasing a ZF 6 Speed Auto as I've heard these are excellent gearboxes... especially mated to the Barra 270T.

Baby turbo is exactly what I'm after, quick to spool, plenty of low / mid range torque and I'm very happy that 270kW are achieved with such low boost levels from the factory - which provides easy scope to upgrade down the track.

Is the non 8" touch screen (the one's in the FG MK1) rubbish? All I can tell from photos on carsales is that the display looks very basic... what are your thoughts on this? (those who currently have these screens equipped in your car).

I'm also looking for a good factory sound system and I definitely want Bluetooth music streaming. Are there any 2008-2010 XR6 Turbo models that have this equipped as an option? I've only seen it 'standard' on 2011+ models...

Once I've sold my Skyline and found my new FG XR6 Turbo... My budget is approx $2k for mods. What should the priority be? ...and where to purchase from \ which workshop to go to in Adelaide?

Thank you in advance!

Minor mods on an FG XR6T will blow your mind then mate.

I personally don't mind the earlier display. Obviously not as nice as the touch screen, but I personally think it's alright.

If you look at an FG series 1 you'll want the 'upgrade', which gives you leather, a better sound system, and a few other things. Pretty sure bluetooth comes with that. Correct me if I'm wrong folks, I never used it in mine.

Honestly 2K on mods wont get you too far, it'll probably give you a tune and something else small like an intake (which isn't crucial that early on).

If you can budget $3,000-$3,500 - you'll get what most workshops will call a stage 1 - it will probably consist of upgraded injectors, maybe a catalytic converter, new/re-gapped spark plugs, and a tune with a flasher unit. that would see you anywhere from 260-290rwkw depending how hard you pushed it and how the car responded. From there'd you'd go intake/full exhaust/intercooler and see about the max the turbo could offer. Obviously if you care for sound, intakes/exhaust and blocking/removing the BOV are all ways of getting nice sounds from them :) I personally love a little bit of a flutter.

For me personally, I found one of the biggest improvements to my old FG was new shocks and springs. It was lowered on kings springs and put new shock absorbers in, and that made a world of difference. Obviously other suspension upgrades will do you even more good, but I was hugely impressed with the feel and reduced body roll from that alone. If I did it again, I'd definitely go adjustable suspension. Tein always have a good name, XYZ are quite good from what I've heard, and currently everyone on the forum is going crazy for shockworks, so check them out.

Can't comment too much on a good tuner for Adelaide, but I'm sure others can chime in.

Bluetooth audio streaming is only in the 8" touch screen in the series 2 FG. Series 1 FG had bluetooth to connect your phone for calls and such, but not audio streaming. HOWEVER, you can actually get an upgrade kit from Mr. FPV over on AFF or Ebay to upgrade a series 1 ICC to a series 2 8" touchscreen, with or without Nav. So maybe look into that too. Seems like he's sorted out the external temperature mismatch issue now too.

Big difference I noticed between my series 1 and series 2 FG's though, was the usefulness of the aircon. The aircon in my FG2 was MUCH better than the aircon in my FG1.

Actually that's exciting to hear stripes.... Does that also mean with the Aircon on in the FG2's onwards, it doesn't suck every bit of life and power out of the car? haha

Hard for me to comment on that bit, as my FG1 was a turbo and the FG2 was a GT...so different engine may have been effected differently by aircon.
