Replacing BF Ute Rear Speakers

I am trying to replace the "speakers" in the back of my BF XR6 ute with a pair of Kenwood 6" units. I have purchased MDF adapter plates and fitted them to the speakers. The screws that protrude from the MDF do not clear the detachable steel speaker mounting plate. Cutting the plate is not an option, as then I will be unable to mount the speaker+MDF to the plate. Is the best option to cut/grind down the screws?

or just shave down the edges of the adapter so that it fits better further down?

grinding screws shorter is easy enough to do.

Shaving the adapter is not an option, it's very thin in most areas and I don't see how that would help anyway to be honest. Interested to hear how other ute owners have dealt with this problem that shouldn't exist.
