The speed limit of vehicle types was decided after police and the Monash University Accident Research Centre conducted a safety review.

Police business management assistant director Gary Glover said there was a need to conduct the review to protect police and the public. He said there were enough high-performance vehicles to ensure police could respond to high-speed pursuits.

First of all, they may be enough cars to do urgent duty runs and engage in pursuits...

but are there enough trained officers to drive them? (Not in NSW..they are desperately short of trained HWP staff - numbers have gone from 950 to down to about 350 - 400)

Secondly, I'm not surprised that the 'tools' at Monash Uni have put their two cents worth in....after all they receive a huge amount of funding from the State Govt in return for giving a 'scientific opinion' in relation to slowing down cars instead of using money to fund defensive driver training.

I'm just suprised (then again I shouldn;t be) that the Victorian Police Association (a UNION by any other name) has just laid down and let this stupidity happen.

Dumb things like this make me really consider leaving - if it ever happens in NSW........

True.

I should use the term 'collision' or 'crash'

It's just habit I guess.

I drive north of Hornsby each day. And most arvos there are one or two police cars potrolling the late arvo traffic. And most arvos I see a marked Police car cruising the 60 zone at 80-90 kmh. He's not chasing anything. Just zooming along with his side radar on, watching the opposite direction.

And in the section he's doing it in, there are plenty of side streets where there are often cars attempting to cross the main road to get to the other direction of flow.

I see no need for this guy(s) driving at these speeds. Skilled or not, at the speed he's going at, he'll just take twice as long to stop.

Oh come on!

Hands up who's been passed by a cop going over the speed limit while just driving around during their shift. These guys are supposed to be setting the example!

Me,Me,Me!

curious, you may be the exception to the rule, but I know of cops who've gone past a 'newby' cop sitting on the side of the road with a radar at over 200kmh just to stir him up and see him fumble around trying to get the car started to chase them in a hurry!

Excuse me?

Are you saying this cannot possibly happen or that he's such a good driver that he couldn't possibly have or cause a collision?

I have nothing whatsoever against the Police matey. Just passing an observation.

edit: spelling

I once sat behind a marked cop car from Newcastle to Sydney. We were doing 140 most of the time but hit 170km a few times. I figured that if he had a issue, so would I. I pulled off the F3 at the pacific hwy and he gave me a wave as he carried on to pennant hills road. The worst thing about following behind him was the iddiots in the right lane who slammed their brakes on when they saw the cop behind them.

Looks like brain washing from the pedestrian council does affect some people.
