Mondie

I'm sure you're right about the stereo - I think you've looked into that pretty carefully and you really know your stuff when it comes to audio. I hope you're right about the cars too, cos the BMW 530i is one of my prime options when I change cars in 12 months time - and, like you, I'm talking E39 about 2yo. Please do it first as I have a feeling my experience will mirror yours and I don't mind learning from your mistakes if it turns out that way (hope it doesn't). I was within a bee's whisker of buying a BMW before the T and, unlike you, I haven't had any cause to regret the decision I made....just this nagging feeeling about what I might have missed out on in terms of refinement, build quality, driving enjoyment etc.

Cheers

zeke

Lumpen, I know where you're coming from and I agree completely.

Zeke jr, with some very subtle guidance from me, (you have to be subtle to guide teenagers and even then it doesn't work most of the time) recently put together a stereo system. Instead of buying plastic crap from Harvey Norman, he got 30 year old Pioneer coaxial speakers in big wooden boxes and a Luxman amp for $230 in total and connected up his iPod and discman. That system rocks! His mates figured it cost thousands and were more than impressed with the sound. I'd rather listen to it than a lot of stuff I've heard that cost 20 times the price. On some stuff, it sounds sweeter than my own system, but I wouldn't want him to hear me say that.

Oh zeke I know your pain, the amount of times I have tried to guide my friends away from a "Sony All in One, 5 disc CD player, surround sound machine" for the low price of $99.95 is incredible but they always get whats got the most LEDs or the coolest Effect, and them flog them way past distortion.. "man, that's just deep base"\

Mine did cost a fair bit (for a 20Yr Old) but I can justify what I've spent much easier than if I had spent 2K on a car setup. The Tweeters I use are very clear and precise and I much prefer a crisp sound than a heavy Doof Drone (unlike most people my age), the largest system ive seen (in harvey norman) was a sony all-in-wonder package and was about $1800 and I dont think it holds at patch on mine, it didnt have the top end volume, low end punch and just couldn't hold it when pushed.

Many people are amazed at my POV pack setup when I listen to them as they're pretty big drivers that take a bit to get going, but when they do they maintain clarity well past typical listening volumes. At the club where I DJed once or twice had a purpose built sound deadened auditorium, you could hear them on the outside of the building!

My next project is going to be a pair of powered monitors, with a 70WRMS a channel Class AB Amp hidden inside one of the speakers and I'll have a 3.5mm in for Discman source. The drivers will be hopefully Peerless 6"s and Ill have an exponential Bullet Piezo. Very Compact and I've seen this set-up confuse many people (Your discman goes THAT loud!!!) :nono:

And Mondie, I've noticed your a bit of an Audiophile...You wouldnt happen to be interested in a pair of 31 Band Extremely High Quality Graphic Equalisers? You could tweak so much more from your system :msm: or are you more into Surround Sound?

Yep - I can relate to all of that.

You won't sell graphic equalisers to Mondie. He's too much of a purist for that (high quality valve amps etc). But my system is closer to yours - Klipsch RF7's (tractix horns) Musical Fidelity SS amp etc. I sometimes wonder, if photographers find it OK to use soft-focus and other effects such as warming up the colour a bit, why isn't the same thing OK in audiophile land. My system can go VERY loud without distortion and with incredible detail - shakes the concrete floors. But, sometimes I just want a warm, mellow, old-fashioned sound as background music (to dose off to in my grey cardie). Should be able to use a high quality, switchable GE or sound shaper. Have yet to be convinced that such an animal exists this side of 5 figures, though.

Nah, sorry Lumpy, less is more. l dread to think how much purity would be lost by the addition of them :spoton:

JB, sorry abut the hijack, you've been around long enough to know how we operate

Ohhh Valve Amps Mondie! That sounds swish! I've never had the chance the listen to a MacIntosh Valve (apparently the peak) or some such similar.

What I've got is an extremely high current MOSFET Amp which is meant to 'sound' like valves but I dont know about that. It's actually designed as a PA amp BUT its specs are pretty decent:

Class AB

280W/channel@8 Ohm

450W/channel@4 Ohm

20Hz-20KHz +0/-1 Db

5Hz-50Khz +/- 3Db

SNR 100Db unweighted (20-20k)

THd <0.01%

Damping Factor: >300@8 Ohm

I've actually stopped using the EQ's because there are a million cables and leads everywhere when I use it, though they're very high quality. They are "MonoBlocks" and have high voltage power rails (impossible to clip) and Gold Input/Outputs and the THD is practically no exitsent. but I know what you mean about losing fidelity and being MOSFET again, the Warmth of the Valves would be lost too.

So does ANYBODY want some Extremely High Quality EQ's? This quality will set you back $800+ easily in the shops???

Oh yeah, JB, found out anything more about the Topic... :makedeal:

 LOL!!!! you guys crack me up! I have just been trying to understand what you have been saying, that alone has taken me long enough

Whilst I enjoy good sound, I do not have the knowledge to get the set ups you guys have. Brother in law is the same he has all different older components built to make one very sweet sounding system.

Oh yeah the topic, I will try and go out of my way to get onto this guy, It's a long story but next time I am at my account I will go looking for him in the warehouse. Hopefully I may get further on this topic as he just get's his car from his son who is the one that works for ford. :msm:

Now to throw a spanner in the works. What would be required to make the CD player able to read rewritable CD's?

Although no answer to your question - why would you bother using a rewritable CD with the cost of recordable CD's being so low? I can't say that I have ever bought one myself.

Trent.

If a CD player can read CDR's they can read CDRW's.

If you are refering to what is required to read any burnt CD, I believe they have better oversampling and they spin the disk slower as the writeable CD's have a dye that is not as good to read as an origional CD.

Only some very old and nasty CD players will not read burnt CD's and they are usually due to the oversampling (pre reading) this stops them skipping music when you go over bumps.
