I want to get it changed sooner rather than later to avoid any excessive strain on the driveline. It is a 3.73:1 LSD at the moment but that ratio has been so hard to find for a reasonable $$$... I have seen a lot of 3.23:1 LSD's around but I am worried that it would ruin the acceleration of the car... Mind you I have been wanting to add some HP anyway but I just don't know if it's worth the saving for a measurable loss in acceleration etc.. Also I'm unsure if the diffs are different in terms of splines and auto/manual variants etc... Obviously, the hardest part about these cars is getting the bugger out and if I could do it myself I'd definitely take the time and get it rebuilt but would this be the best option? In saying that, would anyone have recommendations of a shop that will remove and rebuild within a reasonable cost? I don't really care too much about the clunk from the diff because when the car's warm its not too bad... but when it is cold sometimes I have trouble getting it into gear with what feels like gear clash in the box. Would this be solely the diff or could the manual box have some backlash too? Thanks for the help.

Best get it checked before spending money on repairs that may not be required. The diff is not affecting the shifting.

What else could it be? BTW, I have a new tail shaft with centre bearing and new engine mounts.

Get it checked by someone you trust and get a second opinion before splashing cash. I had a bad clunk about 6 months after new diff bushes. Specialist diff place wanted to rebuild the diff. Kmart tyre and auto spotted the bolt in the centre bush had worked loose and fixed it for free. Go figure.
