XR6 Turbo... Fake?

Hey there guys. I recently bought an 04 BA Falcon XR6 Turbo. Love how it looks. It's got some issues, and I've had to change a few things already, and a few more I know need to be changed ASAP, but a question has come up about the car.

 

Out of curiosity, I was looking up what specific stuff on the ID label stood for. I came across multiple sources saying that the engine code for a turbo should be "Y", and for a N/A it should be "H". Well. Mine has a turbo engine, correctly piped, intercooler in place, seems to have all the wiring for the turbo stuff. Has the proper turbocharger for a stock XR6T and it works, though I question if it works properly, but the engine code is "H".

 

So, here's my main question (s). A. Are there any circumstances where a XR6T would be labelled with the "H" engine code? And B. Are there any other telltale signs I could look for to determine if it was originally a turbo, or if someone has just done a very clean swap? And lastly, C. What issues would this actually have? Should I be upset, happy, concerned? 

 

I'm not even sure what I'd could or should do if it turns out to be a "fake" XR6T. Thoughts? Thanks.

I know there aren't any replies here yet, but I've got an update. Talked with Ford who confirmed that the car definitely didn't start out its life as a turbo model. I'm not sure what I should even do or think at this point. lol

Well. I got the car because I wanted a decent car. lol. I want to do done upgrades to it. It's got to be a family car first and foremost. I did want to do the basic performance things though. Dump, cat, plugs, injectors, intercooler, intake maybe, and a tune. I'm not looking for huge amounts of power, or a 10 second car or anything, just make it a bit more fun to drive. Want to get everything done that needs to be fixed before any of that though. 14 year old car, needs some work. Now though, I'm unsure about some stuff. For all I know, it could have 20,000 km on the engine, or half a million. Also, why go through the trouble of an engine swap to a turbo, and not modify it at all? It doesn't even have the braided oil feed line that just about every single other one I've seen has.

well, if you're reasonably mechanically inclined, then changing from N/A to turbo doesn't require a huge amount of complex changes to make it seem like a "clean" changeover, as you put it, while leaving the N/A engine in place. Not a good idea to modify this car, unless you can confirm the internal condition of the engine. I'd be selling it and buying a different one that's factory turbo, if I couldn't confirm the state of the engine and driveline.

I'm reasonably sure it's an entire 240 swap, not just slapping the turbo on an NA Barra. I've had a couple mechanics look at it and none of them picked up on it being swapped over. The engine itself seems to be in good condition, though there is some rough idle and it doesn't really feel like a 300+ HP car. Might have Ford do a thorough check of it to see what I'm working with, what's actually all been done to it, etc.

You've already checked it yourself and confirmed it has been though right? This is why you can't just take a high performance car to any old mechanic/service shop and expect results.

 

Being a BA, an na engine is no worse than a turbo motor for mods pretty much, as you can't push a BA turbo motor much anyway.

 

If you were already happy to fix the maintenance items as well as lightly modify it then I'd recommend taking it to your nearest tuner and getting them to first check it over, and providing all is well, mod and tune it in one hit. Blokes here will point you to the right workshop.
