Sat Nav Self Install

OK. Here is a question for the tech guru's. I have just purchased a Blaupunkt Travel-Pilot DX-N (previous model to DX-V) from Germany and have been told that this will work fine in the Falcon. I also have a modified XBOX with 200gig HD. Here’s the plan. I would like to have the Sat Nav and the XBOX running in the car, through the premium sound screen. The sat nav also came with a screen so if possible, I wouldn't mind putting this in one of the headrests, but it's not really necessary. To get all this installed by a pro is likely to cost a small fortune and providing it’s not too difficult, I don’t mind giving it a shot myself. So what would I need to get this up and running? As far as I know, I will need a signal converter (IVSC-5501 or newer?) which I should be able to get from the states for about $230. I also need some kind of interface cable from Blau Australia. Will they sell this to me separately? Is this the one that supposedly costs about $180 and if so, could I make one myself for less? Is the signal converter and BA interface cable the only additional items I need? Once I have all the bits is it difficult to wire up and mount? I was planning on mounting the Satnav unit in the boot and the XBOX under the front pax seat. Thanks in advance for any help or advice. If anyone knows where I can pick up the Australian Satnav software at a “good” price ;) that would also be appreciated.

Cheers,

Chris

cdm you've answered 99% of your own questions.

Get onto turbocorty to arrange buying the BA interfance cable only from him. That'll get the IVSC (can use 3302 instead of 5502) hooked up. The plug your Sat Nav into the RGB input port of the IVSC, plug the Xbox into one of the CVBS ports and you're in business.

The screen that comes with the satnav may be RGB only which would mean a bit of a bummer... as the IVSC only has a single RGB out and that is used for the BA screen. The other outputs are CVBS...

Looking at the IVSC-5501 manual it seems that you are ablye to use a RGB Y cable to allow more than "signal from the sat nav to the signal box and screen. I would imagine that it could be possible to use the RGB Y cable in the other direction, eg. Signal Convertor to both the BA screen and the sat nav screen.

Anyways, a connection diagram from the IVSC-5501 just below.

Thanks heaps for the help guys! Aaron do you rekon it would be easy to set up once I have all the bits? Do I have to pull the ICC very far forward to get in behind it and is there any complications with wiring up the IR? Is there any danger in pulling the ICC forward? I heard that the BCM is behind it and it might shut down if tilted beyond a certain angle - rumour/truth? I guess I will also need an inverter to run the xbox as I don't want to convert it to 12v. Cheers.

Man I love these forums. The info is just brilliant.

CDM - please keep us all posted. I'm dying to know how you go with this. And take pics as you go.

Oh... how much has this cost you so far?

Oh... how much has this cost you so far?

Travel Pilot DX-N landed at my doorstep $1200AUD including an extra monitor but no software. XBOX mod cost $500 including HD, but then u got to include the xbox which I think is about $300. Now it has 200gig and I use an FTP prog to dump movies, mp3 "BACKUPS" straight to the box. Also backed up all my games and DVD's to the box so no need to get them pinched from the car.

Ultimately, I would like to have everything installed and running for well under $2500. So far = $1700 (already owned the XBOX) now I just need it all installed. Considering if I went down Blau street it would cost me about $4500 and I'm not sure that includes install, I rekon I'm doing ok. Also, the blau has no HD for storring everything, and it can't play games. It doesn't come with a monitor either.

Ahh yeah sorry guys - forgot that the DX-N unit does input and output (which it overrides to display)

cdm I personalyl belive anyone can put this stuff together and to reassure you you will not have to go near removing the ICC, simply remove the tissue holder and that's it! There's nothing in the manual about the BCM being angle sensitive, but the ICC unit is - well the CD changer portion.. I belive the warnings about it are mainly becuase if it gets tilted with CDs in it you're screwed....

As for the xbox... $500 for the mod.... damn I wish I was charging that much for them when I did it for peopel it'd mean I had the cash to finish my install ;) Got my ICs to build the new powers supply a couple of days ago... $35 each... ouch.. but they will step up 5v DC to 12v which means the unit will survive 'crank'.

Overall none of this stuff is rocket science, you have plenty of info here to draw on. Use common sense, read your manuals, get clarification on stuff you don't understand... Even if you mount the DX-N, mount the IVSC and mount your xbox and lay our cable paths etc you could then get an installer to finish off and you won't be paying them $80/hr to drill holes into fuel lines etc when mounting brackets.

hi,

It's easy to install the system yourself.

The interface is available.

As I have mentioned before, it is $180.00 but it't not just a staight lead, It has a circuit on it to allow switching and other functions via remote control.

To run both screens you will need the RGB Y splitter as mentioned on the other posts. you will also need a 1.5m RGB cable to connect between the dx-n and the ivsc and a 4 meter rgb to run from the dx-n to the icc.

If you need any assistance, call me at Blau..ask for George.

Bye

This is a great thread!

Are we able to buy the signal converter box from the US? With the strength of the Aussie Banana at the moment importing anything from the states is in our favour, surely? If anyone finds out where to buy the converter from cheaply can they post it up, I'm keen to get one too.

I have no problems with doing this stuff myself either, as it all looks like it just plugs together. Should be easy (in theory :smilielol: ). I am not after sat nav really, just dvd/mp3 playback.

I'll do a bit of a google today and see what I can find.
