Personally I dont think its so much the oil, any major oil company has spent millions on developments in there products and none of them will kill your engine as such as long as you stick to 15w-40 oil that ford recomend. I find most poeple who acctualy care about there engine use full synthetic. The real issue is mantinance, and regularity. You want a engine to run according to ford, do it every 15k. Want your engine to run good and last, do it every 7.5k. Want to give you engine the best possible life with minimal wear, do it every 5k. If your car is modified then best listen to your tuner.

This is how I maintian my car.

Factory servies with ford to comply with the log book with diff and trans oils done every time.

Engine every 5k with filter.

I recomend nulon oil. Why? Cos its full synthetic, its 15w-40, and its pretty good prices. And it comes in larger bottles than most other oils so its cheeper again in bulk.

Cos its full synthetic, its 15w-40...

That’s actually a semi-synthetic, but does the job for me. The 10W-40 is a full-synthetic (gold bottle)

I actually use the 10w 40... :( I didnt even realise, used it for over a year now and always thought I was 15w 40, I even probably read it 20 times and never ticked over in the noggen. Shows how much attention I payed in the bottle. Oh well, 10w-40 works for me. :)

Was confused about oil grades up until now!

Thanks everyone, especially Lawsy! It all makes a lot of sense now.

My mechanic used the Mobil1 5W-50 for the last service, and I noticed the petrol consumption go up some, and the car running a bit sluggish. Which was no surprise at all (and after reading all the 10 pages of this topic :)) as the guy who I bought the car from (2003 BA T, with about 300rKw) used a 0W-30 for the last service. Hope not much damage was done with it. The car runs fine, so I'll cross my fingers there and hope he didn't use something silly like that the whole time.

The car is being serviced as I am typing this, with the Mobil 1 (above mentioned), so I'll stick with that for about 5K, and then switch to either a 10W-40 or a 10W-50 of some kind.

Thanks again guys, it was a long read, but well worth it!

cheers,

Zlaya

I go with the 15W40 syn Penrite and it runs nice. My uncle swears by the stuff so I thought I'd give it a go and it works for me. Previous owner put Elf in it, which I think is an alright brand too.

Just phoned my local ford dealers

1 uses Castrol Professional Magnatec 10w-30

1 uses Shell Helix Ultra 5w-30

Thought these grades may be out of spec with ford, wots recommended for FG turbos.

I was going to use Lawsy's suggestion of Nulon 10w=40

No body has said their donk's blown because of 'x' brand oil. I think they are all going to be good oils if the owners/fanatics of our cars recommend them. Only use magnatec myself for ten years now, NEVER been disapointed. How you warm up/cool down helps if yur gonna give er shy*e.Just my 2 cents worth :w00t2:
