Why 8.5" wide front wheels

I'm curious, is there any reason why most of the aftermarket wheels for BA onwards Falcons use 8.5" wide front wheels rather than the 8" wide which Ford/FPV use? Is it a visual improvement thing or is there a performance benefit to it?

Able to elaborate on what the performance gain is? Does the .5" enable a wider tyre to be used or is the same size tyre just being stretched on?

Also can run wider tyres, once I can afford a set of decent 255 rears (245 on right now).  Really need 9" or larger (so can run 265 legally) but mine were ultra light weight, strong and cheap so I couldn't say no.  Also went from 18" to 17" and have a nicer ride now to boot.
