Starter Motor problem

Solenoids stay good for ages. It is usually just a rusty crap build up on the shaft that prevents it from throwing the gear out. 

 

If you hardly use your car then a new starter would be the go as once rust starts on the shaft it likes to grow back and fark it all up again pretty quick.

Yeah, you got me...I've got two screw drivers and a file in my 30yr toolbox which shows off my mechanical knowledge.

Got very little idea how it all works but damn I like driving it!

As jet mentioned earlier, rip yours out take it down Repco or Bursons and get a changerover/ reconditioned unit.

Shouldn't much more than $200.

Will be as good as new plus have warranty on it.

Arrrrr okay. Take it to your local mechanic or auto electrician. Both will get it sorted for ya. Very basic job, a couple of bolts and an earth contact wire.

Reckon the couple of taps I gave it will get me through 4 or 5 start-ups tomorrow ?

Mate that is trick that's been used since the invention of the first starter motors.

You'll been fine to do it to get ya where ya need to go.

Just make sure ya don't hit the contact points (where the electrical wire bolt on)

Big main body of the starter only.

There's a couple more wires than just earth. Two or three in total.

Battery earth and switch.

But leave it to the auto spark or mechanic if ya not confident doing it yourself. Shouldn't cost ya to much.

Earth and 12V cables and a little bitty switching wire. Three in total.

 

If it is just crap on the shaft then you can key it a bunch of times to clean it off. 

 

If it's the brushes then it'll be hit and miss whether it will work. It'll help to smack it while turning the key. 

 

If the armature is rooted then I wouldn't drive anywhere. 

 

Prognosis: you'll be right mate if you fix it asap.
