Good Afternoon all,

Firstly, first post, so apologies in advance if this is in the wrong spot or anything like that.

So, I have mucked around with boosted straight 6 diesels for the last few years, my current means of transport was a company car and I had a Factory Turbo 80 series Land Cruiser as a weekend truck. The Cruiser was (Still is actually) the dream truck and I have thrown a bit of cash at her. For those of you that are familiar with the world of performance Jap diesels she has the 1HD-T 4.2 I6 engine, 600x400x76mm top mount Cross Country intercooler with a 900CFM Spal fan, GTurbo BadBoy turbo running 25 psi, XXi 12mm fuel pump, Moonlight Fabrications airbox, XXi 1000nm clutch, Raslarr 4" snorkel, 3" straight pipe exhaust making 154rwkw at 3600rpm and 580rwnm at 1800 RPM on a fairly conservative tune (17:1 AFR pre boost, 20:1 on boost, leaning out to 21:1 above about 3000rpm) so it goes pretty hard for a 2.6 tonne lifted truck. Now, since that time I've moved interstate, changed jobs and the cruiser has become the daily driver. However, I'm doing a lot more longer distance travelling now so the old cruiser isn't quite ideal for this with a happy cruising speed of about 108 km/h and no cruise etc etc.

Hence the following question: I'm thinking of picking up a 2010ish G6ET - In my books it should be a comfortable highway vehicle, a bit of power for overtaking and the nice power delivery of a boosted 6. So, given that wound up diesels, specifically Toyota Land Cruisers is the main extent of my vehicular knowledge, I'd really appreciate a bit of guidance as to what to expect, what to look for, what to avoid and so on.

Thank you in advance!

And PS, if anyone is looking for a pretty mint 80 series...

Welcome champ.

Love them old girls. A bloke at work has a very mint turbo 80 series.

My advice for you would be to go test drive them and see how you go.

If you can find one modded that would be a bonus. They make similar torque to your cruiser when modded. Sometimes more.

I think you'll love it.

I have a G6ET and think it is great on the highway.

Effortless comfortable driving.

Cruise control can be set in 1kph increments and will drop back gears and engine brake when going downhill (although on long steep hills I prefer to just brake).

Fuel consumption is also pretty good.

Even our BA wagon is pretty good on the highway - but the newer 6 speed turbo is much better.

I cannot imagine you regretting it.

Id like to see a 80 series with 1000+nm in a mud pit... that would be digging to China lol.

I'd try and get a slightly newer g6et, with some factory warranty left if possible.

Definitely test drive more than one.

The barra turbo engines also respond really well to mods.

G6ET, you won't regret it.

My G6ET is stock, currently in Melbourne on holiday and have Hold@n Calais as hire car (6L V8)

Got the V8 cos want power + luxury.

seat of the pants, Calais is slower off the start, slower in all areas actually.

Cruise control is not as good as mine, it won't change down to slow you to the set speed on a decline.

Let it have control down one hill to see how far over it went and I gave up after it had reached 12klm over.

Mine reaches about 5 over then drops to lower gear to slow to set speed.

Mine is an 08, the only thing I like more on the Calais is the electronic goodies, the navigation system is very good, HUD is great which also includes navigation, better Bluetooth for phone etc.

Although the overall menu for the system can get a little bit clunky

still think the actual sound from the stereo is better on mine.

bottom line, Ford Turbo 6 eats Hold@n V8 for breakfast (not that I'm biased in any way whatsoever)

Cruise on mine works perfect.

Unfortunately holdan is the better car, just a bit slower. Nothing that a blower with a descent amount of boost cant fix. And the added advantage is no turbo lag. Go drive a high performance blown V8 ( over 450rwkw) and tell me it isnt awesome...

I would have a blown VF over a blown FG any day...

Azza I owned a 2010 ve 2 V with 570hp NA and it was pretty quick but it was the biggest lover of fuel id ever driven, average 26lt per 100km and I was still doing mostly freeway driving. my financial  yr fuel bill was 16k plus 7k insurance = fark that.

But it was quickish 12.78QT street tyre run and sounded sex with 1.78 headers and duel 3.5inch diflippo zorst that bellowed out at 143bells thank u liverpool zorst for that hehe. had to get xforce cat with the varax thingos to shut it up as boys in blue defected me 4 times in 6mths.

Then sold it 2mth later for 38k all up it cost 56k for the car and 17k in mods... huge waste in the end. had planed on a 2300 blower and whatnot. my mates uncle oown it now and my 04xr ute beat it pretty easy though auto vs man helped.

ahhh I'm waiting for the day I get pumped by a supercharged v8 with like 600hp.

I'd see this thing at the lights and be thinking "yeah lets go!"....worst bit is this is a WA workshops' video.
