Sounds like the thermostat was sticking initially and once replaced acted like a thermostat should.

@ROB83R 70 to 90 is just fine for an alloy/cast motor. Don't go colder, you'll run into several issues, while not major, will decrease engine life and increase fuel consumption.

On that note don't flog ya car until it's warmed up!

Thermostat shouldn't be sitting that low

1/4 is too cold Imo

mine was doing that because the little check valve failed and was constantly letting water through

now with a fresh thermostat it just stays at half which makes me happy

Mine sits at a third and goes to just under half when sitting.

One thing I picked up over the years is don't trust a factory sender for diagnosis especially temp senders and oil switches.

A motor can be too hot by the time it goes up and there could be not enough oil well before the light comes on.

Stock mine would sit just below half, then the tuner replaced it with a lower temp one and it's now a touch over 1/4.  Have been thinking about going back to a stock one due to reading about fuel consumption etc.

Should I return to a stock thermostat?

The easy option - I like it.

If you want to slightly decrease fuel consumption , yes.  But car will need a retune and fan setting adjusted

Fuel consumption is tune related not temp related, but the tune is temp related so it affects the fuel consumption if that makes sense.

All things being right nothing drastic would change by heating your engine up a few degrees.

The coolant temp correction will (bloody well should) be tuned to take care of this.

Edit: Agree on fan tuning though :)
