If you use a decent gauge that has a high and low waring it will go off before the factory sensor does if it is set properly.

I can hit 20 just free revving in neutral hahaha. Tried replacing the sender (electronic boost gauge) but same problem. Gauge/sender/tubes/wiring kit was about $60 on eBay (per gauge). My boost gauge is 100% useless now, it reads waaaaaayyyy off when driving and goes out of range in half a second if I get up it and just flashes at me. +1 that unless gauges are accurate and have the sound and warning light alarm they are really only good for glancing at now and then or looking fancy to others. I use the oil temp to remind myself not to beat up on it yet during warm up (takes about ten minutes driving to really get up to a decent temp - coolant dial is up in half the time so don't rely on that). Also to watch it on hot days if towing. Oil pressure I glance at now and then but it's secondary to temperature.

Problem is the resistance of the sender has to match the gauge. Having said that, sometimes they still work and you are probably more interested in the gauge reading relative to where it normally sits rather than the absolute value of the reading. So if the wrong sender gave you a high reading for example, that doesnt really matter once you learn where the gauge normally sits and therefore notice when it deviates from this.
