My kids PC is blue screening, critical process died. SFC says it repairs startup files but doesn't work, dism didn't work at all, the SSD shows up as healthy and partitioned etc, further investigation showed windows isn't installed so can't reset or restore etc.

What do?

I was hoping to avoid that due to some things being things, but seems like the likely option.

At least it's the school holidays, so he won't lose his school work.

you can reinstall windows without losing any of the "files" so no big deal there.

I downloaded the windows media creation tool but it can't repair the install cos it doesn't see it.

I'll have to get an ISO and go from there I think.

hmm, if it cannot even find it, you might have to backup the "files" manually via command line before trying to then re-install anew

I was thinking I'll get another SSD, install windows on that and use recuver or something to fix it up.

that's one way to get it done, replace the disk, install windows on the replacement, copy the files manually back from the old SSD onto the new one haha
