couple of switches and a hub

What's the hub do?  Rare to see one of those in use these days, it's all switches.

Switches are smart hubs that don't broadcast traffic blindly to all ports (goodbye security) but instead route it to the correct one.  You probably mean some other type of device.  Switches generally come in 5 port size right up to 48 port in consumer and medium business installs.  Hubs were more used back in the "olden days".  I don't think I have seen a real "hub" in at least a decade.

You're right - just double checked - it's a 16 port gigabyte switch - it was a replacement for a hub about a decade ago.

Pretty much transferred the office wiring setup to my ensuite 18months ago when I decided to work from home.

A couple of years earlier and I'd be running 10base-t (actually pulled out twisted pair to put in cat-5 when I moved the office here)

Oh god 10 base-T, that was high school days and our first ever gaming LAN when my buddy and I didn't realise you had to have a different final octet in your IPs hahaha.  Good times.

+1 for PoE switch, usefull to power cameras and waps.

I love PoE switches, got a managed 8 port in roofspace powering some hikvision 3mp cameras. The recorder is also in roofspace, both connected to a decent UPS.

Only issue is wifi modem is downstairs and not on a UPS so if power is down the footage will still record but won't be viewable right away and wont be uploading snapshots to the ftp server online.

Can't wait to get my hands on some hik 4mp cameras, I use a local shop in Perth and find the price really isn't much more than buying from ebay and the fact I don't have to post it back if there is a problem is priceless.

I got 5 mp cameras and have had them for a while.

you will need dedicated switch for them and have a server that is capable of processing the feeds(CPU) and then recording it to fast enough hard drives.

Don't forget you need a UPS for the Switch to support the cameras.

You will also need a UPS for the server.

Have fun putting that in the roof space in Perth's summer heat......

unless you have a dedicated room setup in the roof space with aircon.

Works just fine has some ventilation. Beats getting it stolen if people break in. The switch and recorder don't seem to get too dusty or hot. only worry is the UPS in the heat. Been running this way for years.

The hard drives are plenty fast enough, only 5400rpm wd surveillance grade iirc, cpu is the only worry but switching to dedicated recorder worked well. each camera uses less than 10% of the 100mbit link..this is why I still run solid core cat5 to cameras (as well as it being easier to crimp an RJ45 plug on).

What cameras are you running?

well, just a word of advise.

Just recently someone in the extended family, went away for holidays.

Since he works on the mine, he was not home for 5 weeks.

They cleaned his house out completely and I mean completely including the nvr and switch and ups from the roof space.

If they see cameras, they will look for the nvr in all the known locations.

They then went into his roof space and found what they needed and unplugged it and a decent manner as I suspect they were going to use it at their home.

Yes they took the cameras, but left the cabling there.

They took his speed boat, his bike, his jetski, the trailer. you name it, they took it.

Left him with an empty house. lucky he had insurance, but the hassle of having to go and buy all that stuff new, just ain't worth it.

This discussion reminds me of a thread on another forum. Guys posts up pics obtain from one of his camera's of a meth head stealing the every same camera that obtained the pics.

The pics also included the methheads company name on his shirt AND his car's rego number! Arrest followed shortly after.

Was his cameras uploading snapshots to his remote FTP server? :cool1: sadly not enough bandwidth to do video. Compressed snapshots use enough bandwidth.

that's really sad what happened to your mate, despite getting fixed up by insurance it's bloody sh*t. Thieves sh*t me off but I reckon a lot of people are robbed by people they've let into their homes. A mate recently had his dirt bike stolen and they broke into the house first to get the key to unlock the garage and the shed, they then took an angle grinder to the chains holding the bikes down.

Wonder if he posted about his holiday/schedule on facebook ;) another reason I do not have facebook anymore.

whattttttt cameras are you running, then we can get back to PC games and sh*t :P and someone can recommend some gaming headphones as mine are dying :(
