do you want to extend the range of your WiFi or make things go faster?

see here for faster: https://www.speedtest.net/about/knowledge/fastest-routers

see here for more coverage: https://www.techradar.com/au/news/the-best-wi-fi-extenders

or as Arron said, use another router configured as an access point

see here: https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-turn-an-old-wi-fi-router-into-an-access-point/

So what's a decent laptop under $3k?

Expand

I don't do laptops, got a couple of tablets but that's where portable starts and stops for me

have yourself a google, I find CNET to be a good source of reliable product knowledge

I use the US version as the AUS version doesn't have the same depth of reviews

I find what I want and just look to a AUS site for pricing and go from there

Just need to get a stronger signal out to the shed is all and will double up as a booster for the new place as it’s 2 story’s and completely opposite area from where the incoming will land vs the lounge room for Netflix etc etc

the best method maybe through your power if your shed gets its power from the house

I've been been pretty happy running a Netgear Orbi mesh wifi setup. Full signal and speed right across my house. For greater distance can just get an extra satellite.

I got this one:

I ditched the Qnap and added a computer as a server. QNAP was to slow with 4K on PLEX

I've found both is a good compromise. I have a Synology DS 918+ to store all my media and then run a computer for the plex server.

Ideally I'm wanting to get something like a Lenovo Tiny PC with an i7 to act as my always on server though. Transcoding 4K is a lost cause, even with my i7 8700K so doesn't need to be as powerful.

My NAS is only half the specs of yours :omg:

It does almost everything I need it to do though

the only thing it doesn't do is transcode video on the fly

but that's OK now I know it's limitations, I just make sure I save my media in a format that it can stream without effort

on a side note, I made just under $500 on eBay yesterday so now I can afford a rackmount UPS  :nerd8:

that will make my NAS box happy

So got the Orbi today.... got the three pack as it will assist in sending wifi to the second house when we’re finished building. OMG it was a glitchy asshole to set up... had to do a hard reset on the devices and then finally after 3 hours of pissfarting around it worked.
(read some very similar stories online and heck me trying to read PC lingo about SSID and IP and all that was not helping to trouble shoot haha).

Anywhoooo seems to be working okay *touch wood*  and so it should for the damn price. But I will see how it goes with all my zoom meetings etc tomorrow. So far everyone’s connected and picking up pretty okay speeds.

Yeahhhh...sorry, I forgot about that bit @Mrs Jeturbo lol. To be fair though, once it's setup mine's been the most rock solid internet setup I've ever had!

I can stream 4K movies from my server (which is connected to my network via wifi) with zero issues...and still browse the net and do other stuff on phones etc.
