Seriously? Anecddotal evidence for about the last 8yrs suggest the turbine housing has a higher nickel content and is less prone to cracking.

I'm actually finding this thread pretty educational.

I've been thinking about what to do with regards to upgrades for a while now and will be talking to Rob next month, whilst it's in being checked for the service.

I did some looking around at prices to go from the stock FG turbo to either a GTX3576R or the GTX3582R and some places are selling them for only about $700 difference

So I found this unit on "special" (http://www.pacperformance.com.au/news-9032/garrett-gtx3582r-ford-falcon-xr6t-turbo-upgrade.aspx) and if it's the one in this link (http://www.pacperformance.com.au/products-10806/garrett-gtx3582r-turbocharger-ford-falcon-ba-bf-xr6t.aspx), I'm really thinking of going the 3582 for extra overhead, as I won't really have much money to spend on the car once I'm in debt paying off the house.

They say in the sales spiel:

"The Garrett GTX3582R available at Pac Performance comes equipped with a brand new exhaust housing, meaning there is no need to re-use the factory housing which often is fatigued due to age."

"Another bonus of purchasing the Garrett GTX3582R turbo as a complete package is the highly recommended wastegate flapper modification has already been carried out with the housing itself professionally CNC ported and the OEM-spec 32mm port and flap upgraded to a higher-flowing 37mm setup; helping to rectify the common over boosting issues often seen. The kit also includes a custom CNC folded actuator bracket meaning no more dodgy-looking cut & shut jobs."

"As mentioned before, the foot print of the exhaust housing is the same as the factory housing allowing the Garrett GTX3582R to bolt straight onto the standard exhaust manifold. Not only does this keep the install relatively hassle free it also helps to keep the upgrade low-key in your engine bay. "

They quote $2,895.00 (GST Inclusive) + Shipping for the unit with the Turbosmart actuator.

As I have my wish list including a Jonny Tig cooler, valve springs, updated fuel pump/s (depending on what Rob recommends), airbox and the usual supporting mods, if you wanted to go 450KW and be done with it (I doubt very much I would ever go E85, so it's going to run 98 ron), is this the best way to go, considering my needs are pretty basic and I won't really have much extra per pay to waste rectifying things in the event I've under specced something else?

Thanks. I did a bit of a search and found some other people saying the same thing, I guess I just missed it :)

I did know that Garrett themselves revised their housings to contain more nickel to prevent cracking, but I didn't realise/know that it was pushed into FG model turbo's specifically. (in total about 20 different posts mention it in this forum, from about 8 different people, so a reasonable sample... :P )
