They are metal backed but the plastic extends past the metal backing at the top which is the peice that breaks off. Dont have dam photo on this phone. In any case steel chain running over a steel guide would sound like an excavator doing 200km/h

Yeah I wondered about that.  How do other manufacturers solve the problem?

Here's mine.  For those that don't know the missing plastic should be next to the yellow link.

^^^lol

It doesn't actually extended past the metal like I thought. Definitely gets thinner at that end though

Does look like the chain has made a bit of contact with the metal in steves pic. Cant help but wonder fkn how?

Fixed.

So it turns out to be a broken timing chain guide which (I assume) lodged itself in the gears somewhere, jumped two teeth with the chain and caused the ensuing troubles.

Second hand parts are in anyway, along with oil(!) timing chain arm, VCT gasket cover, s/plug gaskets, rocker cover gasket and crankshaft seals. Plus 10 hours labour.

On the plus side, the mechanic's comments included "sh*t it's quick".

I don't feel quite so guilty about the lax oil change now, but have still learnt my lesson.

Thanks all for the help.

If you don't mind me asking what did they charge you ?

$1495 plus the cam phasers and actuators I supplied. I assume a cam chain guide is $270 in Oz too.....

If I'm looking for positives, less than the $6,120 they originally quoted.

If the has been tuned it possible the issue is not related the cam phasing hardware and couple be a skipped timing chain. It's hard to say exactly what the cause would be without more info though.

Ralph called it in the first reply, no surprises there!
