I removed the stock filter element and installed an Earl's aftermarket filter...with no filter element in it.  Best of both worlds!

Update.

Had a look at it this morning, when started from cold, the intake cam phaser makes a horrendous rapid tapping sound, after 30-60 sec, it goes away and the car sounds normal.

But, if you unplug the actuator, the noise comes back.

They haven't cleaned the actuators, just changed the oil.

Still insist you can't reset the cam phasers "because of the really strong spring" and seem surprised the rattle wasn't Pistons on valves.

They have never seen this on an FG, I must be lucky.

Next step is getting parts sent from Oz, at 1/24 the cost of new parts here and 1/6 the cost of second hand here.

Where do I send my invoice?

I would love to fly you over to show them what to do to be honest. Your advice has been pure gold.

Had to drive 650kms home today in a CRV, fly back and get it when they fix it. Joy.

Fixed.

So it turns out to be a broken timing chain guide which (I assume) lodged itself in the gears somewhere, jumped two teeth with the chain and caused the ensuing troubles.

Second hand parts are in anyway, along with oil(!) timing chain arm, VCT gasket cover, s/plug gaskets, rocker cover gasket and crankshaft seals. Plus 10 hours labour.

On the plus side, the mechanic's comments included "sh*t it's quick".

I don't feel quite so guilty about the lax oil change now, but have still learnt my lesson.

Thanks all for the help.

I and a few other are pretty sure its the chain that breaks the guide and not the broken guide that skips the chain. Chain just gets a bit violent at the limiter or when you lift off abruptly at high rpm. Evidence of this is my car had the top smashed off the guide but the chain had not skipped...Im still rolling a broken guide lol....Must fix that..

You most likely are right, but I haven't seen it and have to take their word for it, just repeating what they told me.

I also have a small section missing from my chain guide, but timing is fine I'm pretty sure.  Just texted my mechanic to ask.  Getting Atomic chain installed while it's apart for other work.  Annoyingly they don't make a non plastic guide upgrade!
