Hi all,

I have a question for all you experts out there. I have recently had my diff bushes replaced with these new type polyurethane I think they are, as apposed from the old rubber types. Now my problem is this.. From around 70km/h onwards I start to hear a whine from the back end and between 94-96km/h its at its loudest. Quite annoying to hear this loud constant whine. Also at cruise around 105km/h its also quite painful to listen to. I find under light acceleration and keeping constant speed the whine is there, however when I back off it all but goes away. Now the people that serviced the car and replaced the diff bushes said to me that its the gear set that is gone and it will need replacing, however I am finding this hard to believe as there was nil noise there before they replaced these bushes. Also they said my tail shaft centre bearing was wearing and needed to be replaced, but I held off on that as they said they could not do it and it needed to be sent away to get done as they could not do it there. The car has only done 64000 km and is a 2009 FG turbo. They blamed the wear on the power the car makes and said it has worn it down but yes I have 370rkw but I rarely flog the car and usually drive it like a grandma.. lol Anyway any help or suggestions would be great as like I said, I'm not really keen to replace the gear set if I don't have to. All I know is I cannot keep driving the car with the whine it has now.

The harder better poly bushes do have a disadvantage which is there is a lot more noise.

My standard fg bushes were gone after 5000kms.they are soft and quieter but I would personally rather more noise then replacing diff bushes more frequently.

I have whine but perhaps not as much as you state.

I run 320rwkw and give it WOT very often.

I had the tailshaft centre bearing and CV replaced at about 260,000km along with ZF to tailshaft coupling and some other bits and pieces.  Wouldn't think yours would be stuffed at that many kays but you never know I guess.

As far as diff whine, yeah I have it.  304,000km old and still works :)  Turn the stereo on and/or get a loud exhaust fitted.  I could only hear the whine when I had a solid one fitted, that was NOISY.  Like a small supercharger in the boot hahaha.  Run the Superpro with the voids in them now (comfort series).

Have heard about the new "in between" range, I think made from poly-elast?  Is that what you have?  Or the normal polyurethane ones?

I shoulda taken a photo of my tailshaft as it was all nicely spraypainted black when I had it on the hoist :P  Was it a shop that did yours Steve or did ya do it yourself?

On the topic of diff whine, I get a slight whining noise only on hard acceleration that I put down to the nolathane diff bushes the car is running.

haha well you probably paid less money, I had to pay about $1300 for the parts including the output flange from transmission so damn right they paint it hahha.

Ray, maybe take your car to a tailshaft shop/another mechanic and have them check it out for ya mate.

When my diff was whining and it was under warranty, I got the whole diff replaced.

Took me like 3-5 times to complain to seaview ford, but when I got the service manager in, he knew what the problem was.

Diff was replaced and has been fine since. However it is starting to develop that whine at about 57km/h again.

It is not that bad, but it is starting again. There is a different diff oil in there from factory and I thought that would help.

Guess not.
