You can save yourself quite a lot of the cost if you buy a replacement CHRA from ebay (recommend genuine garrett only) for around $850 (that's the price I paid a long time ago) and then fit it yourself.

I had a look on ebay, and I know to look for garrett, just a matter of trusting buying it off ebay. Wanting to get this done as quick as possible as am driving to NSW in a few weeks...

 

Edit: Also a big no to me fitting it myself, am not mechanically minded.

CHRA = Centre Housing and Rotating Assembly

Essentially the turbo without the housings.

Thanks. As said, not mechanically minded.

 

I had a look on ebay and saw some of those, price is a lot lower, but have no doubt if I went that path the mechanic would be sure to throw on an extra few hours of labour to make up some of the cost. If they put in a complete turbo, then it should be a direct swap over, right? Bolt out and bolt the other in?

I know it isn't as simple as I am making it sound. Overall I am looking for best price/time to complete ratio.

It's like anything you need done quickly...

if you need it fast, it'll cost extra. If you want it to be cheaper, it may take longer.

Call rotormaster and ask them for their opinion on where to source a CHRA if you want to get a mechanic to fit it quickly or get rotormaster to quote a replacement turbo.

Either way, not cheap going down that path. Cheapest is source your own or 2nd hand and fit it yourself.

Yeah that is spot on. I knew this too, can't have best of both worlds.

 

End of the day I think I will just have to get a credit card and throw it on that. Is kind of BS the price mechanics charge.

Yeah these scumbag mechanics learning a trade and then using those skills to provide a service with the intent of making a living from it. Everyone should be forced to give their skills away for free.

 

FWIW if you've been quoted $1500 drive in drive out that is extremely competitive pricing.

Jeez. Calm down, mate. Wasn't saying they can't charge what they do, just saying it is hard to pay for. So dial it back.

 

Also, the $1500 price tag was just for the turbo I believe, don't think that was labour factored in.

Don't worry about Ralph. He's just playing devils advocate on the issue.

 

If you're in a tough financial position, I'm sure almost everybody here can relate... it's something you'll have to manage in your own time/cost scenario.
